Lens caps... Evil?

Why would you spend thousands of dollars on a lens and not want to have it protected while not in use when on the camera?

As Roland said ... jeans pockets are made for lens caps! 😀

Am looking for a spare cap for my 5cm Elmar. Would like an original one. Missed one on Ebay the other day.
I feel reassured when the cap is in place.
Quite surprised by the strength of feeling out there for leaving them behind>

I've got into the habit of removing the lens cap as I extend the lens on my Mamiya 6, and only replacing it when I collapse the lens. A friend once remarked on seeing me looking through the v/f with the lens cap still in place - "what you see is what you would have got ..."

I use filters of varying quality on all my lenses except a deeply recessed 2.8cm/f3.5. When peak image quality is absolutely required, or when backlight is harsh, I'll unscrew the filter and toss it in a shirt pocket while getting the shots. For 95 percent of shooting, the filters are fine and camera is ready to get a shot without any fumbling beyond setting for the exposure.

I do keep lens caps on the hardly used lenses, like the 21mm. That way the filters aren't getting scuffed while in the camera bag or in a pocket.

Try to keep a lens cap on my Oly Trip - I always thought that it would extend the life of the selenium cell round the lens - any filter wouldn't have the same protective feature.
