Lens filters on the g-system

I regularly use my UV-filters on my lenses and occasionaly i use a polorized one. All are 46mm or the size of the muzzle thread. Now i want to experiment with colored filters and maybe some infra red photography. It's hard to find such filters in 46mm thread. So here's what i've been thinking.

I can get a square sized kit which would also fit other lenses besides my contax cams. But with this option, i could have difficulties with my lens hood/screen.
Or I can purchase filters with larger threads and mount them outside my lenshood. How would this effect the optical quality of the lens?

Do anyone of you guys have any experiments with colored filters on the g system? I'm leaning toward a square sized kit which could fit most of my glass, but im not sure how compatible it would be. i.e. flaring or af trouble..

Any help would be much appreciated!

Where are you located? Here in the U.S., all 46mm filters, including IR & standard colors for B&W (red, yellow, blue, green, et al.) are readily available new through big retailers like B&H or used from eBay, etc. AFAIK, 46mm is not some oddball size like 40mm.

Or is your problem that by "colored filters" you mean you want to use theatrical-type gels?

I was thinking of regular filters. Yellow, orange etc. I have been looking for gear on us-based webshops, and i think i'll have to order online. I live in europe so i have to be sure that what i order will function the way i want it to. In Norway the filter selection in shops is rather poor.

It would be easiest to just use 46mm, but since this is filters i will use only occasionally and probably on different lenses i thought maybe the "square system" would be a better choice... But i might be wrong. I have never tested these and i imagine they may take up some of the space in front of the camera. It might result in vf-block and AF problem..?

My lenses have threadsize of 46, 52 and 55mm.

I'm pretty sure there are some European retailers & I think Schneider Optics, who own B+W, have their own online store. If you already have a bunch of 52mm filters you could always just get a 46-52mm step-up ring; not pretty, but can save you a lot of money. I don't think the 52mm filters are big enough to mess w/the AF or framing, but I think the square systems might.

Contax state that the AF will function with lens apparel up to 70mm. So a step-up ring up to atleast 65 is possible. I still have to give up the lens hood though. I've only used the lenses with a hood so i'm not sure how they handle flare.

Right now i'm thinking of buying filters for 55mm and a couple of step-up rings with some cheap lenshoods and hope they will stay out of my viewfinder and the AF.

Have anyone tried this on their G's?

Not so well, what you say:

They might stay out of the AF, but you will smear a lot of viewfinder territory with 55 mm filters etc and hood above that.

I am not so sure which lenses you have, but I would get the chinese slit hood for the 45mm lens. Look at e-bau-y for vented 46mm hood. Then get 46mm filters and be done. Everything larger will cut your view. Most simply said and there is no way about that because it is the real fact with rangefinders.

Yeah. Youre right. I tried using a paper model yeasterday and it will be too large. Right now my 28's hood is already taking up space in my finder. And with the step up ring it seems it will take up a 1/3+ of the viewfinder.

I'll have to go for 46mm filters
