i know many of us are waiting for the fuji 27 to get released into our grubby little hands...

i also know that many of us are deeply impressed by the faster 35 and it's sharpness and versatility...

what if...

what if the 27 is every bit as good (or almost) as the 35?
will you be keeping your 35 or letting it go?

I dunno, Joe. The 28mm lens I've got for my GXR is every bit as good as the 35mm lens. I like having both ... they're rather different FoVs.

For 35mm format cameras, I normally carry 35 and 50, which make a fine shooting pair assuming I'm going to swap one for the other fairly frequently. When I just want to carry one lens, I want a 40mm.

The same concept works for me with APS-C. My standard kit includes 21 and 35-40 mm lenses, but if I just want one lens I fit the 28mm.

I have railed long and obnoxiously about carrying focal lengths that are closer than multiples of 2 (or .5 depending on (groan) your perspective), and yet I find myself doing a lot of work with a 28, 35 and a 50, all on separate bodies, lately. ...

If I scan through all the photos in my catalog, I use lenses in the range from 35mm to 60mm EFoV far more than any others. So finer incremental steps in this range make sense to me.

With 35mm format, I use 28, 35, 40, and 50 the most. My standard carry kit is 35, 50, 90.

With APS-C format, I use 28, 35, and 40 the most. My standard carry kit, however, is 21, 40, 90; I use the 28 when I want to just carry the one lens.

Somehow, the bigger steps in APS-C format work better for me. It might be due to the difference in DoF between the formats for a given focal length.

my fujis and the rd1 had a 1.5 crop...

if using one lens (on the rd1) i used the 40 the most...60 fov...i know, makes no sense.

lately, with the fujis, my 3some kit is the 18/35/60...28/50/90...first time ever that i went with and was comfortable with a 'standard' kit.

i'm thinking that the 18/27/60 would be even better...

I believe you are over thinking all of this.
Hhether it's a one focal length or another hardly matters as much as how close you are to the subject.
You are a certain distance or closer or further. 35,40,50?? Whatever.
Unless of course you are talking about oof personalities or perspective distortion.
I just don't go with this argument or reasoning of seeing with a certain focal length.
One chooses what to include in a scene or omit. Focal length be damned with this method you either get closer or move back.
The rest is lens measurbating.

one of the things that i have disliked about using a 50 is the distance i am from the subject...i prefer the distance when using a 35/40...

however, my original point (of this thread) was more thinking about the quality of the 35 fuji lens and the quality of the 27...if they are similar would you be keeping both?

I think the two lenses are different enough part from effective FOV for people to not want to dump the 35 for it. Some may buy it for its pancake size. But remember its a 2.8 lens, - 2 stops slower- has no aperture ring and doesn't come with a nice rectangular metal hood and hood cap. If i remember correctly the its about a hundred dollars less. So about the price of a used 35. Thats a lot of trouble to go to just get the FOV of a sum micron-c or nokton on a film body. My guess is most people who want it will just buy it in addition to what they already have.
That said my 28 elmarit-m spends a lot of time on my xp1- so i can see why it would be a popular lens.
I just dont think people would swap the 35 for it.

- xp1 w/ 14/18/35/60 or 18-55 zoom
- xe1 w/ 27

The 35 is going to be my fastest lens...2 stops... I don't plan on getting the 56f1.2 or the 23f1.4 when they finally release it.

well, my arsenal is down a couple these days but i'm in a similar thought pattern...the 40 on the xe1 and the xpro will take either the 28 or 60...
i'm satisfied with the 60 so no 56 for me either and the 27 cuts the 23 off my list as well. i'm still unsure about the 35 as the speed is not a key factor for me, plus i could use the money. the 27 is already paid for so i am still excited about it being added to the bag.

The 35 is just too good to give up. The 27 might be good, but it wont be good below 2.8 if you know what I mean. Those steps below 2.8 are really important - especially when you dont have them!

The 14, 35 and 60 do it for me. The one temptation is the 55-200 zoom which I can easily resist at this time, since it's not readily available.

I'll be keeping my 35mm. It's a great fast lens... the 40mm isn't fast.

I don't think there's a reason ( or lens ) that could make me get rid of the 35 1.4, its just too damn good. However, if the 23 1.4 has an aperture ring and good build quality I imagine I'll be getting one at some point. Efov of 28, 35, 50 and perhaps the 18-55 zoom for travel convenience will probably end up being my entire kit.

The 27 is too middling for me, and no aperture ring is the clincher.

At the moment I'm simply trying to resist a second XP1 body until we know more about Fuji's future plans...but the temptation is still there.

I expect the 27 to be every bit as good. 🙂 If I had both, I'd keep both...one for size, one for speed.
