Lens Hood for Retina IIc?

Hi! I notice that there are flares in my Retina IIc shots especially during sunny 16 moments, as such:

And I was wondering what lens hood can I put on it? I was thinking about the Leica m39 hoods, such as this:

However, is there anything like this on ebay now? What would be the size? I typed "Retina IIc hoods" in ebay, and it only showed original snap-on accessories for the camera.

I also read that certain hoods, when attached, would slightly block the VF. This may be a chance I'm willing to take, just to avoid the flaring on the pictures.

The IIc has a coated lens and should be reasonably resistant to flare.

Without seeing the camera and purely judging from the photo, I would first ensure that all lens elements are clean and free of haze. This looks like an issue of haze more than anything else.

With that out of the way, Kodak used to sell a full line of accessories for the Retina, including a lens hood. They packaged the hood in a small kit with three filters for b/w (red, green and yellow). The bayonet-style hood is square and should work very well at controlling flare.

It was contained in a small brown plastic case.

This fits the Retina Ib/B, IIc/C and IIIc/C. I would think it also fits the Retina Reflex, but I haven't checked.

The Retina IIc uses 29.5mm screw in filters and hoods. Kodak made one that pushes on, I've seen others made for it. You may end up making one out of a 29.5mm filter. The older rubber hoods, like what i have, get hit by dry-rot.

It is a well made twist on bayonet type and is really wonderful to use.

Of coarse you must remove when folding the camera. 😉

I would still check the lens. Open to f/2.8, set the shutter to "B" and lock it open and look at the lens.

Lens flare from haze will show up more in sunny conditions than in overcast conditions.

In any case, the lens hoods are very reasonable.

Zeissfan, will it work if I just cup my hands over the lens? Or turn my back to the light to create a bit of shadow while shooting?

I did some DIY-ing over the weekend using these:

- A plastic lens hood for FSU lenses (worth around $4)
- Some strips of mouse pad foam
- Contact cement

And I got myself a working DIY hood.🙂

That looks like it certainly works! About the same size as the original Kodak hood. I end up leaving the hood at home, and positioning the shutter door for a hood. I just love collapsing the lens and carrying it around closed.

There is a hood for a Retina II on E-bay right now that is actually marked the same, and is a push-on type. Looks original if you are trying to put together an outfit.
