I would really love to take my 28mm f2.8 lens out more, as it's the hardest-earned lens I have yet, but I don't know how comfortable I feel without a hood on it. That being said, everything I've tried has vignetted my photos because the 40mm to 40.5mm step up ring pushes the hoods up into the way. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've never even seen the original hood for this lens before.

Take a look at the B+W #920 wide angle lens hood, available at www.bhphotovideo.com and many other photography retailers.

The B+W #920 is a high quality black anodized aluminum screw on lens hood that is designed for lenses with up to a 70 degree angle of view. It is compatible with wide angle lenses of 28mm or longer focal length in 35mm film format.

If the #920 is not available in the exact thread diameter that your lens has, just get whichever thread size is closest to your lens and use a step up ring to get it to fit.

I have used this approach on a couple of my Leica lenses that have telescoping lens hoods that need to have more length for better flare suppression (Leica loves to keep their telescoping lens hoods short - too short, IMHO).

This is a great solution for a too short lens hood and is also a great fix for one that is lost or missing. B+W filters are top quality. Their lens hoods and step up rings are no different - they are first class all the way.

Flare reduction is but one of the benefits of a lens hood. Another benefit is increased contrast compared to photographs made without a lens hood.

I have seen several side by side compairsons of no lens hood used vs. lens hood used to make identical photographs under identical lighting. The images made with the lens hood always show higher contrast than the images made with no lens hood. This increase in contrast is due to the lens hood's ability to control stray light entering the lens at oblique angles.

Some people seem to dislike using lens hoods, though. The minor viewfinder intrusion is not a bother to me.
I guess it's a personal preference thing...

I suggest a 40->43 step-up ring and then a wide angle hood, like the B+W one above. That's what I did in the past.

One option that might work too, are the new generic X10 hoods, that I believe are 40mm. For example 170881293408@ebay. Never tried that personally though. Played with the idea to get one for my 50/1.5, since it would allow a usable 52mm pol filter solution 🙂

I'll take a look at that, I think I saw one while searching online and I was curious. I just wonder if it would not also be a bit too narrow for a 28mm lens. I really don't like the look polarizing/UV/haze/other clear filters give to a lens, but I like protecting them, so I almost never shoot lenses until I get hoods for them. The B+W hood has been kind of hard to track down online, I will need to look around more. Also, is 40.5mm kind of an odd filter size? I was trying to stay in tune with the rest of my system, which is FSU and uses 40.5mm or 49mm filters/hoods/caps. I've also decided that since there are quite a few generic lens hoods out there and they seem to vary widely, I'm going to spend the few dollars to try the generic X10 version Roland pointed out as well as one more style I found that I haven't tried. For the non-X10 one, I'll also try it in 40.5mm, and if the step up ring still causes it to be a problem, I'll try a 43mm solution and see if that doesn't make up for the extra millimeter distance from the camera body.

Sorry for posting twice, but I just wanted to update: according to the formula posted in this thread about determining correct lens hood size, it appears the only viable solution for a replacement hood for the Canon 28mm 3.5 and 2.8 without stepping the lens up to a wider filter is the replacement lens hood for the Fuji X10 as seen here. They are really a 40mm to 52mm step up ring with a 52mm lens hood on it, but the ~58mm opening on the hood is exactly right. Also, if you have an SLR kit of some kind that uses 52mm filters, they fit inside between the hood and the adapter, so you don't have to extend the hood to the filter's ring and worry about blocking the lens. I haven't tried a 40mm - 43mm solution yet, but I prefer not having to step the lens up at all.
