lenses for M8

I believe the standard M8 frameline pairings are 24/35; 50/75; and 28/90.

My usual combo on 35mm is 28.45.90 (guess which camera 😛) or 35, 50 on the M4. I never tried a 75 on the M, but I think that's as small I'd like to go on a .72 VF.

On an M*, I guess I would probably like to try a 25mm (CV?) and the 40 Nokton.

Anyone using this combo? I'm assuming the 24 framelines will work well with the 25mm lens, but I hear the 40mm nokton brings up the 35 framelines... are these too "loose" for the 40? I read some people modify the lens to bring up 50 framelines...wouldn't that be too "tight"?

The 40mm brings up the 50mm lines. People modify to use with 35mm framelines. The M8 works well with a 40mm (using 35mm framelines) in everything except up close. The 50mm would crop too much and be useless IMO. 24/25mm works fine with the 24mm lines.

The CV25 and the CV40 were my go-to lenses on my M8. The 25 was particularly sweet. A lot of lens in a little package! I seem to recall that I may have just framed with VF, but I can't remember... At any rate, recommended!

i have a 40mm Summicron and interestingly enough it brings up 35mm framelines.....OR 50mm framelines. both?

well here's what happens. If i have a 35mm lens on which i remove and then put on the 40mm Summicron....it brings up 35mm framelines. IF i have a 50mm lens on which i remove and then put on the 40mm then it brings up 50mm framelines!

LOL. weird but true. btw, my lens is NOT modified.

Well, it most likely depends on how hard you click the mount into place. I always used my 40mm by using the play in the mount to keep the 35mm lines in place. However, if I clicked it completely in tight, it brought up the 50mm lines.

I wear glasses so frame lines don't do much for me one way or the other. Oh well.

My go to lens on the M8 was a 35 Summicron. Same is true for my M9. The lens that was released together with the M8 was the 28 Elmarit ASPH and if I was to reacquire a M8 - which I am considering - I'd get get that lens.

I also found a 50 Summicron to be very useful when photographing people and the 90 Elmarit with its 120 mm EFV to be great on the M8. I'd skip the 75.

My favorite was the cv 28/1.9 when I had the M8. Super sharp lens. Even wide open. For me the speed is a big plus with the ISO limitations of the camera. The CV 35/1.4 was ok as well, but I found it to be pretty tight. 28 was just right 🙂

28mm is a great walk-around choice for the M8, for the "one camera one lens" feeling. 🙂

And 50mm is surprisingly useful as a "long normal", a good companion for either the 28 or 24/25mm as a two-lens kit. I think 75mm is too long for the M8, but then I'm biased toward shorter lenses and I know others will not share this opinion. Also, I'd skip the 40mm in favor of 35, again JMHO.

Actually, 21mm is pretty nifty on the M8 too but you'll need a 28mm accessory viewfinder. Some may say to use the whole viewfinder window and wing it...

The best lenses I ever had on my M8 were the CV Ultron 35/1.7 and the Leitz 35/3,5 LTM with adapter. Sharp as can be and just enough contrast that I could go in either direction when "printing" the DNG files.

I still shoot with either the CV 15 M mount or a 21 Elmarit on the M8 along side 35 or 50 Summi on the M9-P.
