lenses: haves and wants

It took a long time for me to get used to the 35mm view. I enjoy it now, but in the beginning it was like, "oh, there's a lot of dead space in this shot huh..."

Yes, and once used to the 35mm view, putting on a 28, or 24, or 21 results in the same "dead space" issue, as a couple of RFF members recently commented. Part of the charm of using wider lenses is in getting in close and using the resulting perspective to the benefit of the picture. I'm now stretching myself with a 21mm, and it does take some rethinking!

Update: Received the 28mm Ultron and am waiting on a 40mm rokkor from laptoprob (great seller). This was a bad thread to be a part of as I see my list is getting smaller :)

I wasn't here 5 years ago, so this is new to me!

I have a single RF lens, a 35mm Ultron. I love it, AND I love not needing to pick which lens to use in any particular situation. I adapt my shot to the lens I have.

However, I recently began carrying my OM system with me for the flexability, so I began thinking this weekend about getting M lenses to hit the focal lengths I like in that system. So, I'd like:

  • a 21mm Superangulon. I have a 75mm SA for my Crown Graphic and love it! I'm sure the rangefinder version would be equally fun, if not more so. Alternatively, I'd go for the CV 21mm M mount if money were an object. But this is a fantasy, so it isn't, right?

  • A 50mm or two. My mentor/super hero/advisor told me to get a Summilux, so I want one of those, a DR Summicron, just cause ... goggles are cool, and I like close focusing, and an old f/1.5 Summarit because 1) I can afford it, and 2) it fits my grunge photography style. Any two of these three would satisfy my needs, but it would take all three to fix the wants.

  • a 75mm for portraits, etc. I've looked and the Summilux is the only one I want.

I think after that, I'll be done. Of course I am old and poor right now, so I may never realize any of this. But a guy can dream can't he?

Wants... I kinda dig Canon LTM lenses and I definately want to try a 35mm. So I kinda want a 35/1.5, but I'm happy to wait for one to pop up somewhere.

I'm actually looking forward to shooting some automated digital color some more, so I really want a zoom for my D40 that I actually like and can afford. But finding one is as likely as finding a digital rangefinder I can afford ;) In fact, the affording bit is definitely limiting me right now...
