I usually read through an entire thread before responding on fora, but this daunts me for now, so I'll refer to only the OP's post.
I have always been in favour of culling, culling and culling: cameras, lenses, films, accessories. The bare minimum. I was a 35 - 50 - 90mm man for the longest time. Never took but one lens / one body except on very rare occasions (two bodies with a lens each).
Recently I culled the 50, after years. It took me a long time of perseverance to understand that this focal lingth did nothing for me. The setup I am working towards is 21/24 - 35 - 75/90. I've used all focal lengths from 24 to 135 and in a year I shall be with my definitive kit of three lenses, but I shall always use only one lens at a time, my vision welded to its angle of view and perspective, whatever that might be.
If one and only one? 35!

Would have to agree with the 35 if only permitted one lens, most days I stick a 35 on the camera and a 50 in the coatpocket. blow off the lint before mounting.

One camera, one lens generally. I think it totally depends on what type of photography you enjoy. I walk the streets and make photos... I'm straight with a 35mm or 50mm lens.
