The flash system from Sony (née Minolta) is expensive and underdeveloped. Any third-party unit with auto-thyrister mode will be perfectly acceptable. I already own a mix of brands (Canon, Nikon, Contax) that I use in manual mode, either off-camera with a cable or mounted directly in the hot shoe.

for a manual flash the various Yongnuo models offer an excellent price / performance ratio. They can ignore pre flashes to synchronize with the main flash and some models have radio receiver built in.
