First post! Just got this Leica M6. It's a graduation gift my parents, grandmother, and uncle pitched in to get me for college (CalArts this fall) Still getting used to it...Anyways, nice to meet you all

Pardon the late response. I moved and have been doing lots of shooting. Thanks. I agree. I could have stopped there! Unfortunately (or fortunately) curiosity got the best of me and I picked up a #11817 Summicron 50 (III) on Monday. I'm still getting used to its long throw. I also tried out the next newest version with the tab and short throw which, while seemingly a better physical match to my 35, the helical had some play and being chrome, was nearly twice as heavy as my older version. Another small consideration was that the earlier version has ten aperture blades and the newer one, eight.
On a side note, my experience with the salesman was both humorous and annoying. He had a trainee with him. After the "coast was clear" and I was identified as a "user" and not a "collector," he began telling stories about picky Leica buyers and attempted to give the young trainee advice on how to deal with "Leica guys" in the future. After all that, when I later commented on the play in the newer lens, he blew it off and insinuated that I "Take it like a man," or perhaps "Suck it up. You're a shooter aren't you?". I just went on, trying to make an objective decision.
I also picked up two bayonet adapters. Both are Shimada-San/Elephoto. One is Contax/Yashica-to-M and the other is Contax/Yashica-to-EOS. I sometimes like to take pictures of large structures and because of the narrowness of most of the streets here the 35 just isn't wide enough to get what I want in the frame. That made me want a 28. I already have a Zeiss 28/2.8 and I've been wanting to use that and my other Zeiss glass on my Canon anyway so I took the plunge. It's like I have three new lenses for each of my other cameras!
The C/Y-M adapter brings up the 50 lines by default. At first I thought about filing it to bring up the 28/90 lines but since 28 is basically just the whole finder and I will also be trying to use my Zeiss 50/1.4 and 35-135 zoom (try being the operative word), I'm leaving it as-is. I'm really looking forward to the 28 since it has such a huge hyperfocal range. I have taken a couple of trial shots and they turned out great. The Planar looks kinda big on it but not any more than the 1.5 Nokton. The real ridiculous combo is with the 35-135 Vario-Sonnar. Pics to come.

Purchased a camera when i was in london last week. Does anyone know what the "D" on the wax seal in the 12' screw on the mount means? i know that a raised L is leica, recessed L for leica service, S for sherry kauter, etc etc but i can't find any information on a raised D.
The body has been repainted as it's nt on the list of bp m2s but the shop which i bought it from is not able to confirm who did the repaint. could anyone shed some light on the matter? it is semi gloss and in some areas of constant wear like the sides, the paint has been polished to a deep gloss. the wear on the edges shows brass underneath and there're no signs of chipping at the edges, just paint "rubbed" off from wear.

Are the two holes in the rewind knob filled with red paint?
Looks to me a camera that is converted by Leitz, but I am not sure because of the photographs. It looks anyhow beautiful. I am however quite sure it is a genuine camera. Congrats!

thank you, u've got me thinking now. the paint appears to "flow" into the top plate engravings but not the serial number. would that suggest that the serial number was engraved after the paint job? if so would that mean that it's a true leica converted bp?
and yes, the two holes are filled with red paint, in the same colour as the one used on the film counter shutter speed dial.

Yes, the number was engraved, but the logo was pressed in during the manufacturing process. On the black top plates the logo was pressed in deeper than on the chrome ones. Therefore you can be sure your M2 is genuine.

Not being an experienced photo guy, how do I light the camera to get better representation of the color. I'm using my wife's P&S digital. (Nikon Coolpix)

The covering is kidskin in cardinal red by Cameraleather which is better represented at their website. I couldn't get the P&S to reflect the color accurately.

Not to just dish Nikon all P&S are, how shall we put it diplomatically? somewhat challenged in accuracy of colour rendition.

Nice M2 you got, a push button rewind even! We don't get to see a lot of those. Nice Summaron too. The colour looks pink on my monitor, not red. Either way it's a funky looking package.

This is my M3 with collapsible Summicron. Leather is black lizard skin from Cameraleather. I like the look, but next time I would choose a little more grippy surface.
