Three weeks before my first wife died, she insisted on attending the wedding of our daughter’s best friend since age 3. She had been asked to officiate, but she could no longer walk unaided and her voice was weakening. It was at this event that our children could see that she was slipping away, despite her spirit, and they were very tender in looking after her.
I used the GR and the A7/55 1.8 not only to document my family during this bittersweet event, but also to frame some of what I could see coming toward us, the fatigue and pain and efforts to push back against the swiftly spreading mestastatic disease.
There is an unreality and unacceptability in being so close to impending death. The world is tilted. To live on seems ridiculously unfair. I tried to frame that, too, here.
