let's talk about the fuji 56 & 90 lenses...

just being selfish here...i want the 90. i have the 56.
i want both. i have no money at the moment for a new lens.
can we trash the 90 for a bit to help cool my jets?
or build up the 56 to help ease the pain?

The 56 doesn't focus close enough for my needs. I'm not getting rid of it, though. I just picked up a used Lensbaby Velvet 56 that focuses 1:2. I'll use that one when I need to get closer.
The 90 is spectacular and you should get one.

Sorry, can't help you. The 90 is the best Fuji-lens I have (but not my most used, though), challenging even some of my best Leicas for portrait but also other things. I love it.

I can help. I just got the 90 and took some quick shots of my daughter yesterday on the X-Pro2. I wasn't bowled over by the sharpness compared to my other XF lenses, let alone the Leicas,

I got it and immediately decided that it wasn't for me. Then I tried it again and I really enjoy it. I would have preferred to have it in Nikon mount but the one I got was Fuji X and that was okay for me, too.
I ran a series of close ups from F1.6-F16 and F1.6 and F2 are probably not somewhere I'll go very often. Once you hit F4 and onwards the resolution is really good. I've been using an 85mm f2.8 Culminar for stuff where I want swirly out of focus highlights. The Lensbaby gives a similar (though not as drastic) look.

The 90 is also really good for performance shots. I just made 2000 exposures with mine at a music fantasy camp that I manage.
The AF is good and I found the resolution to be very acceptable.

i may have figured out a way to pay for the 90...i'd like to get it while it's on sale here...i also need new winter tires (actually, all weather tires) and have an appointment for getting them this coming weekend. responsibility isn't really a strong point of mine...

I guess that's what I'm getting at Joe. I'd use the 56 as a street lens too, but the 90mm, much less so. I do portraits once in awhile, but not often enough. Plus, the 56mm is fine for portraits too. I think you're better off forgetting about the 90mm for now (even though I know it is hard).

For general use, I recently passed on the 56 and went for the 60. Half the weight, a lot smaller, a much wider sweet spot, neither are AF champs. For portraits I can understand the allure of the 56. Beyond that, I'm not sure.

These two lenses cooled my jets for the 90mm:

1. 50-140mm f/2.8 Fuji zoom
The 90mm is too close in focal length to the 56mm for my taste and shooting style. I needed something longer. This Fuji zoom gives me the 90mm focal length plus a few more. This zoom also gives me a useful feature that is unavailable on the 90 -- optical image stabilization.

2. 135mm f/2 Zeiss prime
This adapted Zeiss lens gives me the same f/2 maximum aperture as the 90 and also gives me the longer focal length I need.

I believe 135 is the full frame equivalent of the 90, so maybe I can help with some cold water. My film Nikon 135 lens was one of only two lenses that I ever traded away - just never found it useful. The 56's equivalent is 84, and I often use a setting in that range on my current Fuji zooms

But, of course, YMMV.
