I’ve been using an ICG 365 drum scanner for a number of months after finding one for an amazing price in the local classifieds. You would be pissed if I told you what came with it and the price I paid. Let’s just say that a routine maintenance on my car costs more. :|

I have been wet mounting on a glass carrier on my Leafscan 45, which I still use. Dust control is easier on the 45 simply because there is a very small footprint that I have to worry about. Dust control on the ICG’s drum has been more of a problem and I would like to hear some ideas.

First thing is there is no room in the house for the scanner so it has to live in the garage. It’s not a particularly dirty garage but it has a roll up door, the washer and dryer is in there and there are several floor level vents to the outside. Plenty of opportunities for dust encroachment and generation.

I am currently exploring two avenues to mitigate dust. First is from an I saw of image of Tim Parkin’s setup where he made an enclosure and fed air into it from a consumer air purifier such as a Honeywell 50250-2. I don’t know which model he used but you get the idea. I would also have to make a relief vent. He also had one of those things you stick your hands into like you would use if you were working on a virus. Not sure where to get one of those.

The second idea was to use a dust control system that is used in construction. I’ve seen a zipwall dust barrier system but I am sure there are others.

Finally, regarding dust on the drum itself. I find it difficult to remove dust on the drum, especially the inside where it is just physically difficult to get my hand in there. I understand that dust inside the drum tends to be out of focus, but I think I am still scanning out of focus dust that I still need to spot remove. If I use Aztek’s drum cleaner and scanner wipe I generate static. If I try to remove the static I am putting dust back on the drum with my anti static cloth. Seems anything I use to try to remove dust from the drum just produces or attracts more dust.

In summary:
1) Have you used a dust control system such as an air purifier or dust control barrier?
2) Can you detail for me your procedure for removing dust from the drum and keeping it off through film mounting and drum mounting on the scanner.

Get a indoor grow tent like pot heads use.
They are tall enough to stand in and zip closed.
More robust than a construction zipper for long term use.

My household just bought a pair of oransi hepa cleaners.
These are .75 meter tall tower style cleaners.

Extremely effective even set on the lowest speed.
My allergies are much improved and appearance of dust on tables etc is much much less.
I have one in my office where I dry my film and have noticed a great improvement.

You simply need to create an environment with slightly higher atmospheric pressure, where the supplied air is filtered to exclude dust. You can use a tent, connect it to a ventilator with a filter through a tube and you are set.

Yep, I get that and doing some research. Does anyone here have any experience actually doing it? What did you do, how did you do it, what not to do, best practices etc. Looking to learn from what may have already been done.

Thanks
