LHSA question? I've been rejected!

In the 70's and into the 90's I was a member of the LHSA. I found the equipment for sale by members to sometimes be a good deal and often the item had seen very little or no use. A couple of weeks ago I attempted to join the group and paid by CC over their website. I have not heard from them and today when I was paying my CC bill I noticed the charge for the membership had been refunded. I have sent an email but haven't heard back but didn't know if this was in error of if I am not welcom in the group. Do you think they don't want me because i don't collect and i use my cameras? I must confess there are finger prints on my equipment and I have made a living with it for many years. Any members out there with suggestions or thoughts.

The LHSA continued to piss me off during the year I was a member.
Communication is HORRIBLE with them.
It seems that the only time you hear from them is when they want you to renew your membership.
Their homepage is not updated, links/sections that they said 1 year+ ago would be built never happened - all in all I get the feeling the whole thing is run by a 12 year old with A.D.D.

I would not renew my membership again if the membership was one buck.
 
Wait for an explanation. Nobody gets rejected!

You will receive the first publication late as memberships run Jan to Dec.
 
I don't think they rejected you. I recently renewed by credit card on the web site and kept getting emails that I hadn't renewed and would not receive the next issue of the magazine or the items for sale catalog. (BTW- there have been some good deals in the past that are worth checking out)

I'm sure it's just a screw up as my experience shows. Send an email to Madge at lhsa@lhsa.org and I'm sure she can fix the whole thing.

You should join so we can have some good shooters and not just collectors!

Xray, I was a member of the LHSA several years ago after I was proposed for membership by the then president of the group and found it a worthwhile group...Unlike you, however, I felt the Leica equipment for sale was, in some cases, fully priced and I never felt there were any bargains in what was for sale; it was just very good Leica stuff and, if you wanted the best, you had to pay for it...But as far as membership is concerned, I suggest you keep after them, particularly if you can get a member to propose your membership...I believe that something unusual must have happened in your case but if you want to join, keep after them, keep after them, keep after them...and best of luck...bob :angel:
 
LHSA membership applications are packaged with all new Leica bodies. You don't need any member to sponsor you, or has that changed? I too, was a member a few years ago, and found the magazine worthwhile, but the used equipment catalog had very few good deals, if any. Seems like most members are 70+ years old, and love to talk about uncommon or collectible Leica gear, but only take their cameras out to use them once or twice a year, such as their "spring shoot" where they get 20 or 30 members to spend a weekend together at some four star hotel.

I know I may be generalizing and slightly exaggerating, but it's all true, I swear!.....
 
George S I think you're right about the general run of members. I figured that's why they might not want me because I actually use my cameras for what they were designed to do, take photographs. ;<)

I have found a few very good deals over time. I purchased my 21 Elmarit and finder from a member about ten years ago and have made a few other purchases over the years. Granted most of these guys are trying to get more than the item is worth because of some imagined rarity.

I'll see if I hear from them in a few days and if not then I guess they don't need new members or old ones that wnat to re join.

I agree about the website (archaic, but supposed to be due for update) and not hearing anything until renewal time. I joined for the first time last year, primarily because I wanted several back issues, and had no luck finding them.
Then they had a board meeting, and decided to issue a DVD-Rom with the complete Viewfinder #1 to end of 2004. I received it, and it's a little treasure for a Leicafile. They had talked about using it as a recruiting tool, possibly including it with a new subscription. I haven't read anything new about that, however.
I also noted a rather long pause before the membership started, with no contact beforehand.

Youdon't need to be recommended by anyone---yer $55 speaks loudly enough. And it's not just about collectors as a review of the recent "rangefinder" mag will show.
They absolutely love for folks to send photos for publication.
Just follow Gman's advice and get in touch w/Madge and she'll fix you up...

Just to bring you up to date. I heard from LHSA today and there has been a glitch in their website or something that has refunded a couple of our membership dues. The very nice lady that answered the phone straightened everything out and gave me a membership at no charge. This was totally unexpected but I do appreciate their interest in having an old member back.

Thanks LHSA and I look forward to seeing the new magazine.

You use your cameras to take photographs! My goodness, man, have you no shame. That's as bad as owning a bicycle and choosing to ride it rather than just polish it up every day and admire it!

Jeez, and I thought this was a respectable joint to hang out in! 😱
