An interesting thread.....
I really don't care about flickr, but I do care about the pictures I post on RFF, simply because I value the expertise critique here much more than than on other sites.
But I've often wondered why some pictures attract many more clicks and comments than others. Sometimes I am quite surprised by which pictures get the clicks. Here a few factors I think I have identified:
1) Thumbnail factor. If a picture doesn't awake interest as a thumbnail, no-one will open it. Certain types of images with large, format-filling structures definately have an advantage over pictures with great detail.
2) Face factor. Anything that shows a person attracts more clicks.
3) Girl factor. Anything with a pretty girl or a nude gets a lot of clicks.
I'm sure there are a few others I haven't identified.
One thing that bothers me in RFF is that the older the picture, the more clicks get registered. I can't imagine anyone going through the pictures I posted several years ago, so I assume that there is something in the background which causes automatic clicks, possibly the stream at the top of the RFF home page which shows random selections from the gallery. There are rarely new comments on the old pictures, so I'm pretty sure these clicks are just some kind of noise. After a few months, the number of clicks on a picture seams meaningless.

Hi Peter,
I agree with your 3 points given above. As for actually having very old pics clicked on, I believe that people clcik on them. I often get comments on image that I have posted over two years ago. A posted image may have 800 views and 20 comments .. and then they become 21 comments ...The number of views far exceed the number of comments. I sometimes form the ratio=number of comments/number of views as a statistic.

- Raid,
Interesting observation. Different from mine though; I only get comments on recent posts, say from the last week.
But then again you've got better pictures (I mean that seriously).

Hi,
That's interesting; I often get pictures I've put up in 2006 in the top three for popularity. And one of the biggest referrers is forum.nikoniarze.pl
Why this should be escapes me.

Hi,
Could be, I suppose. I can't trace it without learning Polish. This is the photo:-

No Great merit to it that I can see and I missed the corner of a "no parking" cone; it's just one of my Summitar test shots.
