Great, another special edition/collector piece. Is it me or are Leica disappearing up their own fundamental orifice with these? Surely they're never going to achive any kind of sales volume if every new product is purely aimed at the megarich.

Also, just read the B+W magazine review of the 75 Summicron APO. Very nice, but 1600 quids!!! Back to the old Voigtlander Apo-lanthar it is, then.

After reading the write up on this, it looks to me like an M-2 with meter, rather than an M-3 with meter. It has the frame counter around the advance lever, and it has bright-frames for 35,50, 90.

on 9/15 Leica will be announcing a truly wonderful special edition M,
certainly one of their best special editions ever.
Jaded as I am, even I want one.

Have fun guessing what it will be. You will find out 9/15.

Well, lessee...

From The History Channel's "This Day in History" website:

TIDE TURNS IN BATTLE OF BRITAIN:
September 15, 1940

The Battle of Britain reaches its climax when the Royal Air Force (RAF) downs 56 invading German aircraft in two dogfights lasting less than an hour. The costly raid convinced the German high command that the Luftwaffe could not achieve air supremacy over Britain, and the next day daylight attacks were replaced with nighttime sorties as a concession of defeat.

Hmmm, no, guess they probably won't be doing a commemorative Leica for that one.

And from Historyplace.com --

September 15, 1935 -- The Nuremberg Race Laws of 1935 deprived German Jews of their rights of citizenship, giving them the status of "subjects" in Hitler's Reich. The laws also made it forbidden for Jews to marry or have sexual relations with Aryans or to employ young Aryan women as household help. (An Aryan being a person with blond hair and blue eyes of Germanic heritage.)

Nope, pretty sure they won't do a commemorative for that.

How about...

Marilyn Monroe's skirt scene filmed

The famous picture of Marilyn Monroe, laughing as her skirt is blown up by the blast from a subway vent, is shot on this day during the filming of The Seven Year Itch. The scene infuriated her husband, Joe DiMaggio, who felt it was exhibitionist. The couple divorced shortly after.

Well, at least that one would make a nicer top-plate engraving.

From other web searches:

Pim Mulier forms "Haarlem Football Club"

Might sell well in the Netherlands, but otherwise...?

Okay, how about this one from the 440 International site:

It was a grand time in Hooterville. Oliver (Wendell) Douglas and his socialite wife Lisa; storekeeper Sam Drucker; Arnold the Pig and a whole bunch of funny neighbors showed up at Green Acres on CBS-TV. Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor headed a memorable cast in this, the first of six seasons on the network.

THERE we go... Arnold the Pig would look great engraved on a Leica top plate.

But I'm afraid it'd be more likely to be something cheesy such as commemorating...

Princess Diana and Prince Charles celebrated the birth of their second child, a blue-eyed baby boy who weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces. Prince Harry (Henry Charles Albert David) is third in line to succeed to the British throne.

It appears to me that Leica's new offering really has only two markets - the rich, who want a nice accessory for their $12k Hermes handbags and the rich who collect cameras. Leica seems to spend alot of time and effort providing for these two markets. I assume, since Leica is selling the cameras, that Leica feels it is a profitable expenditure of their resources and effort.

Has anyone ever heard estimates on the amount of money spent each year by camera collectors?

Sounds like a good RFF poll. How much did you spend on camera equipment over the last year? I just hope there is a choice for: Too ashamed to confess! :)

And, since it a Leica forum poll, a "Too Poor To Participate" choice.

Last year or last 12 month?

Come to think of it, I spent around 3000 Euro for a used D60 with battery grip, an EF-24-85USM, an EF-35/2 and had money left for a Contax T-VS.

This year I'm saving, first I want that Canon 5d and then I want to use it at the carnival in Salvador de Bahia in 2007 so I bought a Planar 35/2, a Contax G1, a wooden tripod and a Metz 45-CT5, only.

And portuguese lessons on CDs :)

The Canon 5d plus the flight to Salvador is cheaper than an a la carte Leica!

Wait a minute. Wait a minute. That lens has no tab unlike the regular one. That makes it very attractive to someone like me who can't use tabs. I wonder what the price will be like here in the U.S.? That UK price translates to $3,483! Erm, forget it!
