Light L16 and the rise of computational photography

Really enjoying reading about and seeing your L16 photos Godfrey. As for the Guzzi V7III.. what a beautiful bike. The new wheels look great.

A hand-held panorama I made yesterday while riding the Racer up Mount Hamilton Road, overlooking Silicon Valley from the southeast:

Yesterday was the last day of the "Wings of Freedom" air show at Moffett Field in Mountain View, CA. I managed to get there around two in the afternoon and decided that the big panorama type of approach I used for the Santa Clara Valley vista was a perfect way to try to capture the scale of Hanger 1, the historic dirigible hanger at Moffett Field. This time I held the camera vertically and made seven exposures ... The resulting panorama merge file is about 33,000x7000 pixels in size, big enough for a print about 92 inches wide at 360 ppi! The detail in this image is amazing when you go to the full rez image...

Very nice real world samples G.

That pic of the Mitchell, I'm just thinking how good that would look shot with a Fuji GW690 and Ektar!

I read today here that Leica has invested in Light's computational photography technology. I'm not surprised. This technology is in its infancy just like digital capture originally was. The article mentions the potential industrial and surveillance applications, which would provide some more diversity to Leica's potential income.

Leica says that partnering with Light will allow its (relatively) ancient brand to stay relevant as photography evolves.

“The Leica brand is founded on a long tradition of technology leadership, precision engineering, and craftsmanship,” says Leica Chairman Dr. Andreas Kaufmann. “Since the birth of its first digital camera in 1996, Leica has embarked on a path of digital photography technology evolution.

“With the rapid development of the computational photography, partnering with the innovators at Light ensures Leica to extend its tradition of excellence into the computational photography era.”

Yes, I saw that article yesterday. I am very happy to see Leica continuing in its role as an innovation company and expanding its theater of operations. They have such a wealth of optical and photographic expertise to bring to the world, and the new realm of computational photography is a fascinating place to see that expertise flourish.

Meanwhile, the Light L16 continues to be developed into a truly fine photographic tool. The latest improvements/additions to the firmware and image processing software have given it greater range and versatility. I enjoy using it a huge amount!

Some friends I snapped during a visit to SF for a Sunday matinee ...
