I'm looking for a hand held analog light meter for low light photography that would supplement the lower range capability of the built-in meter on my Bessa R or M6. Based on my internet research it seems like a used Gossen Luna Pro or Pro - F [Luna 6 or 6F in EU] with EV -4 to 17 range are the models to consider but I'm wary about the older versions using batteries that are no longer available. Is converting or re calibrating the older units for use with modern batteries within the DIY realm? I've seen the Sekonic L308 recommended in another thread, does it have similar specs? I can't find specs on-line.

Any info/advice will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Joseph

Gossen sells (pricy!) adapters for the meters that used mercury batteries; some of the newer models - LunaLite, LunaSix F, ProfiSix (those are the names in Europe, don't know about the US) use regular 9V block batteries that are available at every gas-station/supermarket/drug store...

PS: My favorite is the LunaLite, which uses 3 LEDs instead of a meter needle - much harder to break than a fragile needle mechanism, and you can see it much better in the dark!

My Luna Pro just arrived with working Merc cells! not great for the environment, but it saved me the price of the adapter, which i will eventually get. The meter is really easy to use, though I must admit, the different readings for incident and reflected light on the same subject has me worried...experimentation time i guess.

Chris,
Were you metering your reflected light reading from an 18% grey card? If not, try that for comparison with your incident light reading -- they should be the same or very close.

Had my Lunapro tweaked a couple of times to no avail, set up with new type batts...it's a turkey, always was. I'd Ebay it except I don't need enemies.

The cds cells die of old age, just like the cds and selenium cells in Canon 7s.

I trust my new Digisix and my old Minolta IV flashmeter (exceptionally good as a continuous meter).

I use my Minolta FlashMeter more than 90% of the time -- it's been very dependable.
