My new (to me) Ikon has "Limited Edition" and a number engraved on the front of the top plate, as well as a serial number at the back.

What's the significance of the Limited Edition status? It wasn't on the other Ikon I've seen in the flesh.

The limited editions were the very first batch of silver Zeiss Ikon bodies released by Zeiss/Cosina. They probably did it to help kick start sales. The only difference from a normal Zeiss Ikon body is the Limited Edition engraving and an extra number. It still has a 1552xxxx serial number right?

The black finish Zeiss Ikon was released about 6 to 9 months later.

True... Zeiss were taking reservations on the Limited Edition before release. I had conveyed my wish to be on the reservation list, but was never notified of availability... maybe I was too far from a participating dealer. But, I later got a black one from RFF-sponsor PopFlash, so that was fine too. 🙂
