I linked to a Smugmug picture on a 15/4.5 Heliar thread.
It disappeared. I re-linked to a smaller version. It also disappeared.
Thread is here: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2055636#post2055636
The missing photo is in Post #6.
When I go to edit the post with the linked picture, the text of the link shows, but no picture shows on screen. Have I run afoul of a new RFF rule? Or is this a problem on the Smugmug end?

Short followup: I see that others' linked pix are fine in other threads. Maybe I did something incorrectly? Copy web location of pic, move to RFF, click on the sun-set picture icon and paste URL . . .that's what I did at least.

Hmm: the picture is above. Like last night, it also showed initially when posted, but then it "disappeared" over night.

On a different note, for the last few days I can no longer see "Photos from the Gallery" at the top of the opening forum page. I see the "Photos from the Gallery" section, and the name of each photo (usually four across the top), but where the photos used to appear, now all I see are broken links. This seemed to happen not long after we got the new Gallery. Are the links all broken now?
Best,

Joe: the picture shows now. I re-cut and repasted. Hmm. Mysterious. Joe, thanks for looking into it. You can ignore this thread and I'll ping you if the photo disappears again.
@Timmyjoe: I think the RFF crew is aware of the Gallery issues. . .

Thanks Rover as well, I don't know what I did wrong, but to quote "Brazil" the problem seems to have "fixed itself." Cue Bob Hoskins . . .
OK, I am using my MacBook
FIrst photo from flickr I opened the image at flickr, clicked Share above the image, then copied the BBcode from there and pasted directly into the reply box.
The second from my RFF Gallery, I opened the image, right clicked and chose Copy Image address, then in the reply box I clicked the Insert image button (Mountain and Sun Rise), pasted the address in the image address box that pops up, and, well, both actions worked.

yes. The problem seems to be intermittent. Apologies for the Saturday morning fire drill Rover. Noe that I re-posted the image in the Heliar thread it seems to have stuck.

yes
I also just uploaded images to the gallery without a problem
This has nothing to do with the forum or the poster of the link. What happens is that the website hosting the image has disabled hot linking. It is common practice. Do a google search on hot linking and you will see what I mean. but in a nut shell, it does not allow the content of a website to be posted somewhere else as a link. i.e. a link to m image.

Maybe because of the same effect, many flickr images here in several threads are gone after a while (or even after few hours), when the temporary direct link is canceled by the web software. Same problem if you have software changes (like RFF gallery).
There are photo websites offering permanent links for the images. I can confirm its true for pbase.com (since two years I use the service). Don't know of a true permanent solution on the long term (decades, not years!).

In order to maintain links to flickr. Flickr links can not be tampered with within flickr. For example if you link an image here that is marked "private" ("viewable only by me") in Flickr then, later make the image "public" ("viewable by anyone")... the link will be broken.
Each change within flickr creates a new version and a new image address.
In order to keep your linked images permanently link... do not tamper with them (change sets, privacy settings, syncing of aperture/LR albums etc....)
Others may have info for other photo storage sites or more on flickr. I've only shared what little I know.
Cheers
