Capa in Love and War - Why the Death Of A Loyalist Soldier Is True. But cannot recall the author.
Thanks a lot for your ideas, folks! Keep posting!
First Link I posted, as I recall, quotes a friend of the solder who died. It is a long article, but interesting.

I seem to recall Richard Whelan tracked down the family of the soldier, who did indeed die that day. He wrote a piece about it in this edition of Aperture.
There's also an interesting piece by Horst Haas in The Digital Journalist.
Do I think it's faked? Don't care. I don't think Capa thought it was faked, if that makes sense.
Cheers, P.

Pherdinand
the snow must go on
After reading about it here, i bought the Gerda Taro book.
I must say, i am not super impressed by it - somehow i just don't have strong feeling s when looking at the shots. I'm sure they are fine and the problem is with me, but i am slightly disappointed.
But i learned something, so it's okay i guess

I have to say, Pherdinand, that I feel the same way about what I have seen of Taro's work. I'm looking forward to seeing the show at the Barbican in January and getting a fuller perspective, but so far I fail to see the "undiscovered genius" that others seem to find.

It is interesting to find out that the young darkroom assistant that melted Capa's negatives from the D Day landings was Larry Burrows! Becoming himself a figure in combat photography in Vietnam in the sixties...
This is a myth I'm afraid. See this source regarding that day in Life's London office.
