LLL 35/2 Replica - One year later, how do you feel about your lens?

My ‘prejudice’ is against tyrannies that crush the human spirit and remember people like one of my business partner’s grandfather who was sent away for 5 years to a “reeducation camp” during the Cultural Revolution and later managed to escape to formerly free Hong Kong. Or my father who spent 2 years in a Siberian slave labor camp in WWII for the crime of not being Russian . Wake up, Coogee. Read before you malign others. That’s all I have to say about this.

Just a quote for the record.

All the best,
Mike

Sorry, what does a US military plane have to do with a long discontinued out of patent West German lens? Or photography? Or our experience of using the lens in the last year?
Your prejudices about all things Chinese are perhaps best kept to yourself.

The principle to respect IP, though LLL may not infringe IP, but this kind of practice like many business there is quite common. Be nice to strongers.

Let me summarize the one year experience to conclude
1. LLL lens is not a replica or reissued Leica products, they are reverse engineered guess/knock off copy
2. images quality is a spectrum due to QC issue
3. LLL is a three NOs company - no address, no customer service, no named manufacturer, and BH does not sell it.
4. the purpose of this discussion is buyers beware or caveat emptor

They were still making the actual original 35mm Summicron when the Cultural Revolution was happening. That was over 50 years ago.

WW2 Siberia? What???

I’m not sure what your intention is here at all.

This is the internet, a global place.

I have never before bought as many CV lenses as I have done since the LLL project started and it was written about here at RFF. This is all I can say here now.

This thread is hilarious. The mental gymnastics people go to justify hatred of a demographic is amazing. With a name like Liam, what's your take on all pillaging and colonization of white Anglo Saxons over the last few centuries? Or is that ok? I guess American military expansion is ok cause they're the "white" color? See how absurd this whole discussion is when you recontextualize it?

Keep it to the lenses man, seriously.

Light Lens Lab is arguably the makings of a new Voigtlander, where it was scrappy/lesser quality in the beginning and then grew into something reputable. Whether it takes shape, I don't know but they've clearly moved quality after the 8E. I'm sure beyond the Lecia maxis, most people seem to appreciate Voigtlander for bringing more options to the table.

As a sidenote, how similar/different are the lens designs of the pre-ASPH Summilux and 35mm Nokton? Did Voigtlander reference the Summilux to create the Nokton?

This is probably a better/more apt comparison than most realise. Similarly, Japanese stuff was lambasted as low quality copies for a long time after the war (due largely to anti-Japanese sentiment rather than logic or experience), and correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't some of Voigtlander's lenses "copies" of earlier lenses made by a totally different company under the same name?

Cosina paid to use Voigtlander brand name and they do not advertise Norton as pre-ASPH replica. James may have different life experiences and hold different point of view, everyone is different. There are stories that inventors were copied, sell cheap on the market, and people like cheap goods, so the knock off copies made enough money, they bought the inventors patents. This kind of practice is rare in developed countries guided by law, ethical and moral standards.

It may be as simple as the thought that Leica has been for many the holy grail of lens perfection (and high cost for luxury items), while "Made in China" has been associated with "cheap stuff", so bringing these two giants together was not well received by many people.

Other Chinese lens manufacturers such as TTartisans, 7artisans, LaoWao et al are doing fine, they have some excellent lens. The 28mmf5.6 is an example. It is a totally different optical design than Leica’s reissued, the quality control is excellent and You can buy it from BH or their website with warranty.

They did not claim to produce replicas of Leica lenses.

I don't agree with any comparisons to Voigtlander/Cosina. Cosina has been a reputable camera and lens manufacturer since at least the 1960s. It has produced cameras and lenses under its own name and numerous different cameras / lenses for other brands. To say that VC came from nothing, or had only so-so optics at launch of its M39 lenses back in the late 1990s / early 2000s, is not at all accurate. Those first generation lenses like the 28mm f/3.5 and 35mm f/2.5 are still great lenses today. LLL as far as I can tell is still a rather mysterious company, at least outside of China.

Jeeze... it seems some people here really have their knickers 'a-twisting because a Chinese company (gasp!) re-issued a quite faithful replica of a German luxury brand item which had become absurdly priced.

For the record, I like mine a lot and I have the original L/M Leitz version, too. I plan on selling it eventually.

On black and white film they're basically indistinguishable optically, on color film I noticed that the LLL lens has a slightly cooler rendition of color, akin to Nikon lenses, which I actually happen to like. Since it's much cheaper than the original and optically nearly identical I basically use it whenever I would have used the original before - this is especially true for scenarios like going to the beach or in the rain etc.

Oh, and a lot of reputable camera shops and sellers in Japan have it in their inventory and sell it with guarantee and all - the price on these quickly went up however now touching close to $1500 because people realized what it was and what a bargain it was, too.

I'm grateful it exists and as a early adopter I got an excellent price on it, too!

let’s me do some replica work just for fun……

For day to day time keeping, they're basically indistinguishable, on watch tester I noticed that the Rolex replica is slightly off, akin to other replica watches, which I actually happen to like. Since it's much cheaper than the original and look from distance is nearly identical I basically use it whenever I would have used the original before - this is especially true for scenarios like going to the beach or in the rain etc.

What is your point? You already made your slur on Chinese 'laws, ethics and morals' on the last page?
Why are you so angry about a camera lens? It seems like all you have ever posted about is LLL? Are you a sock puppet? Not very original really.
