I am trying to put together a section for a local photo club where members from specific geo regions can get together on excursions. I will start one in the new forum I will create and then expand from there. This will give us a great opprtunity to drink and shoot the camera on dedicated field type trips.

No, let me guess. At your last (only?) camera club, you convinced every member that they need a canon rangefinder with a nice set of lenses. And then they hated you and banned you from the club.

I actively dislike the traditional camera club as well (at least the few that I've been with.) They're great for the novice photographer to learn the basics and to become competent. Everyone's time is taken up with explaining what the black round thing screwed on the front of a lens is. (lens hood) The experienced photographer gets nothing out of it besides the good feeling of passing on some knowledge. Creative work is not appreciated because it may break some rules. Photography clubs, the inclusive kind, foster mediocre (club) photography aimed at pleasing judges. I'm thinking we're a little more exclusive, and that's not always a bad thing, but it's certainly not a politically coorrect viewpoint.

i just have this vision of a bunch of camera geeks hanging around a chilly school gym, talking about lens tests, and what hood fits what lens and where you can find the best deals.
they all wear glasses (like me) and dress funny (like me).
they rarely take photos and when they do they are bad shots.
they have poorly attended slide shows and 2 people control the whole thing.
they have a great website (remember, they are geeks) and newsletter.
when they are not meeting they are 'chatting' on line with each other and rarely leave the house.
need i go on?

I was in a camera club for a few years a while back. It was anything but the camera geeks. Sure, there were a couple, but most of the club was organized around shooting, competitions, and critiique and presentations. One a month we would have technical presentation which usually centered on camera technique, and very little on camera technical details.
We would have things like scavanger hunts, where you would need to collect 24 separate things on one roll of 24 exposure film. You turn in the film, they process it, then we project them for a judged competition. There was the monthly competiton where there were three categories that you could enter slides in . Nature, Open, and the assigned monthly project. We would enter our winners in regional competitions, and those winners went national. We also entered international salons. I was lucky to get national a couple times, and one international. It was a lot of fun, and really challenged your creativity and technical skills. But you grew as a photographer real fast.
I though about re-joining the club again, but found that its changed drasticly. Its mostly retirees, and there are few advanced photographers. Mostly novice and some stragglers. Its unfortunate, because it was a great place to share your photos, much like we do here in our galleries.
I guess my point is that its worth a visit to see what your local clubs are all about. They may be all geeks, but then again....
