so Lluis (aka sinetsin) and I are coming to London in October (7-11).
Any good exhibitions you'd recommend? And what's the best place to have a lot of good beer for not too much money (if that even exists)?

now where's my raincoat...

Lots of places to go for both!
See what the national portrait gallery are doing, they have great things on often. irving penn a month or two back i loved. Tate modern are running are 'voyeurism' exhibition which may well still be running then, i think there's street/voyeuristic photography featured. and tate modern's a great pace to hang out. Lots of little photo exhibitions are on all the time, time out magazine will have them all. There was Susan Meiselas (sp?) exhibit in a little gallery round the corner from Tate Modern recently, not sure if it's closed. (and the obvious things like the british museum shouldn't be missed if you get the chance!)
Beer... not cheap anywhere. lots of fun places. National Film Theatre on the South bank has a couple of bars, one by the river one more posh at the back, worth going to and seeing people walk past. there's some good old boozers in soho worth checking out, one off old compton street near the palace theatre that i can't remember the name of is really old school. The Lamb and Flag just off Longacre, near Covent Garden is a nice old fashioned pub. If you like cocktails try Floridita, Wardour Street, or the cigar and cocktail bar next to it. Or The Red Fort on Dean Street, opposite the Soho Theatre.
Have a great time.

thanks a lot!

btw, is 'drinking in public' allowed? because here in germany you can just grab a beer in a shop and sit in a park or wherever you want, which is usually cheaper than an evening in the pub.
that sounds like a really odd question, but you know what I mean.

Yes, you can drink on the street and in parks in London.

you're not allowed to drink on public transport anymore. can drink in parks for sure, in the summer anyway. or at least everyone does whether you're meant to or not.

Stop by the Leica store in Mayfair. It's tiny, but when I went, the two young gentlemen who worked there were happy to let me play with an M9 and a 50/0.95, and a few other lenses. I put the 50/0.95 on my M6TTL and took a shot with it just to see how it worked.

Tate Modern, heard it's very good.

Kew Gardens, wonderful place if you are keen on trees and plants.

British Museum, lots of stolen items from all over the worlds are there. Natural History Museum in another nice place on my list.

Hampstead Heath, wonderful for walking...

Many people like Madame Tussauds, but I don't. Last time I was there was in 1988. I hear it's quite expensive as well.

Make sure you have winter/rain proof clothing in that time. The only certainty about British Weather is it's uncertainty!

Oh make sure try some proper indian curry from East London. Ask them not to give you the usual chicken, lamb or whatever curry. Ask for some Bangladeshi pickle whilst eating your main course, provided you like spicy pickle. Meh I'm fasting I shouldn't be talking about food now! :)

I'll post some more if/when I remember.

On the Sunday, perhaps a walk around the top end of Brick Lane and the old brewery. You can spend quite some time snapping at the people walking about, it's chilled out and you will rarely get any hassle, except from the obviously dodgy looking people drinking cider from plastic bottles and selling things they stole over the previous few days. You'll also see a lot of other 'street photographers' here.

I'll post about pubs when I get home, I have a notebook especially for these ;-)

Tate Modern is worth seeing, you can combine it in to a walk along the Thames. Silverprint (www.silverprint.co.uk) and a cool little fish and chip restauraunt are near there (I doubt you will be able to finish the dish and you can order a jug of red wine).

TennesseJones already mentioned the South bank and you could consider Camden, although it is touristy.

Drinking is allowed most public places, just keep an eye out for signs like this:

so, I'll be in London next week. PM me if anyone wants to go grab a beer somewhere. I have been to London before but I do not know the city, so every on-location guide will be very welcome. I hope Lluis (aka sinetsin) can make it there too.
