This forum is pretty dead.

I feel like posting in it more often, but I don't have a rangefinder attached to either LF camera.

So what are the options for LF RF??

either way shameless plug for my latest blog (it's LF based), just in case I can reach my target viewing numbers by saturday ;)

ah uh
i thought you are lonely
and look for companion
or other lonelies

sorry, have no LF so no LF contribution from me.

It is sad to see these forums so underused. I do have RF's on all of my Speed/Crown Graphics and my 2 Busch Pressman. They barely qualify, and don't in many eyes, as they are all 2x3, but they are little brothers to the 4x5's. I not only enjoy shooting them (with 120 film backs for convenience), but I enjoy the strange looks I get from onlookers. I can just read minds... "look at the wierd old guy with the wierd old camera..."

They are also very undervalued, and a good Crown with the 105/3.7 Ektar is a very fine shooter. Add the convenience of 2 1/4 square, 2 1/4 x 2 3/4 or 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 images on 120 film, depending on the film back used, and it is very versatile. Why more people don't use them is a mystery to me.

There is an echo in here... "Hellooooo (ooo ooo)"

The cameras fetch too much money in any condition. That's the biggest problem I see. For the price versus another camera in 'medium' format, they aren't great. I'm sure a few hundred are stored away as movie props throughout the world.

LF photography is a slow, deliberate process. It may look dead but
we are just now getting our tripods set up and leveled.

Press cameras like the Crown, Speed, Super Graphics, the Bush Pressman mentioned by Harry, the Meridian, an older american metal press camera, the verious models and types of the Linhof Technika's. In the UK you may
want to look for and old MPP.

There are also the folks who modify old Polaroid cameras and put 4x5 backs on them. Razzle Dogs Razzle 900 looks interesting and the expensive but well reviewed Littman 45

My local shop had a mono rail at a silly price they even dragged me over to it. They were real dissapponted when I said it would not fit into the trunk(boot) of my roadster(sports car).

The gadget bag you saw me with on last outing is about as big as I can use.

Instead of the motto "f8 and be there"; large format photographers say, "f32 and be there 20 minutes early!!"

OK, I think I'll give LF a try. Where do I go to find out everything I need to know?

Oh my-- I felt that pull for a long time before I actually fell off the fence. Just recently, actually. Took delivery of a (non-RF) Field Camera, a Shen-Hao. It's a delightful, contemplative exercise -- a bit of a departure from 35mm shooting. At this point I literally set aside a few hours on the weekend to work my way through the process.

Don't let the learning curve put you off, I kept taking one step forward and 2 steps back as I read the mountains of material that are available. I finally decided to pick a basic camera and start shooting.

I had originally considered starting with a Crown Graphic (and I will still keep my eyes out for a good deal on one of the "baby" versions with a roll back), but the functioning 4x5's often go for a relatively high price at present.

Good luck and enjoy,

JT

Noel, how much was the camera? I'll get onto posting you that loader as soon as I can, I've been so damn busy this past week, and I'll be working 8-5 every day next week as well!

Kully, go to Large Format Photography's forum, ask there. You'll wanna look on ebay to get a 4x5 camera at a fair price. all the guys on LFPF are american really.

If you worked your way down to swindon sometime you could have a play with my Cambo or maybe the Kodak field camera if I ever finish modding it!

Here's my LF rangefinder resting. I was able to set the rangefinder to match the 210 Xenar. Most of the time I handhold "Kong" (or is "Kong" holding me). I need more time to play with "Kong". :D Regards
