Hey

I have a bit of an interest in long exposure shooting, although not extreme. Think 10stop nd filter and exposure times around 2-8 minutes or so.

I have been playing with the thought of trying it with the r-d1 but have first been trying to find any info on how the sensor noise behaves at those exposure times and so on. I've also started thinking it will eat one battery per shot, but who knows. :)

Anyway, is there anyone that have tried this or knows of any shots available online to check out? I don't want to run out and buy a nd110 filter if it isn't going to work that well anyway as they are a bit expensive just having in a drawer.

Hi! I've tried long exposures with infrared on my RD-1 but only with 30 sec. max exposure. Noise is not a big issue for low ISO but I got hot pixels (fixed via on-camera utility) and really poor battery performance. The NR engine will take about 30 seconds to proess the image and save the image on your SD card. If you want to try, just prepare spare batteries or a charger :).
Good luck and let us see the results.

never tried it...i wonder how long the battery might last at 8 minutes per exposure...

yeah that is kind of what i was thinking as well. :) 8 minutes aren't too usual for me to do though, most of the time i'm around 3-5 minutes, don't think it makes much difference though in this case, it'll probably eat batteries anyway hehe.

The noise reduction doesn't work on RAW files though, does it?

I might just go ahead an try, the upside is that the cable release should probably be a lot cheaper than the one i have for my 5dmkii seeing that it is mechanical in this case. And the filter size is a lot smaller as well so the filters, although not cheap, shouldn't be as expensive as the one I have which is 72mm.

If/when i try, I'll let you guys know the results. :)

PS. The reason I started thinking about this was because it would essentially allow me to do long exposures when on vacation trips, but not having to bring loads and loads of bulky SLR equipment for a holiday. Also the RF allows me to focus without taking the filter off every single time, and there shouldn't be a problem with light leaking back through the view finder during the exposure. When I think about it, RF just sounds perfect in that sense for this kind of work - but I worry about the technical quality of the files in the case of the R-D1 (because i inevitably compare it to my 5dmarkii) as noise performance is an actual issue for long exposures.

By the way, I haven't at all thought of this before for some reason, but how do you set the 30sec shutter speed? Or do you mean that in bulb mode it WILL close the shutter after 30 secs even if I lock the cable release for 5 minutes?

I use a cable release and a cronograph :) in bulb mode.
I guess my exposures in IR, given the temperature of the day.

The NR is never completely OFF even on RAW files, I suppose.
I've shot in RAW and RAW+JPEG mode and in both cases the it took the same time to write the file on the SD.

As for the noise issue, is a no-issue for me since I only shoot B&W :)

But it is possible to go longer than 30sec exposures right?
