Look What I found In Köln

If you are spending too much time thinking about gear as it relates to your photography, just have a look at the work of Miroslav Tichy here:

http://www.tichyocean.ch/Documentations/The_Artist

With his home made cameras lenses and enlarger, he has managed to produce some beautiful images.

I haven't purchased any gear in quite some time but I must admit my frequent photo book purchases and film hoarding is using up most of my discretionary photography budget!

I once saw a titanium Noctilux 50/1... on the picture :)
Would be definitely a perfect match for titanium MP.

Charlie - As the owner of an f1 Noctilux, a quick question:

How does the 0.95 compare in use? Not talking about the IQ (the shots will speak for themselves), but instead the focus throw, weight, materials, lense-width etc...

In Australia it's knows as 'tall poppy syndrome' Charlie! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tall_poppy_syndrome :p

Slightly off topic but to do with music and fame ... our own Peter Garrett, lead singer from the enigmatic OZ band 'Midnight Oil' came out of retirement temporarily this weekend to do a benefit concert for the Australian bushfire victims. He's currently the federal government minister for environment, heritage and the arts and I was highly impressed that he chose to do this ... apparently the concert which was in Sydney last night was a ripper ... Crowded House performed also!

I'll be getting an opportunity to photograph and meet Peter later in the year when he opens an exhibition I'm shooting for the Queensland University Of Technology! :)

Hey Keith,
you're right, it's amazing that Peter is doing this. What a great example to us all. Actually, I will be coming to OZ later on in the year. We've been offered a two week tour due to the success of the current record. I'm really looking forward to it. I also think that it's great that you're shooting at Q.U.T , should be a blast.

Just what is it specifically about Olsen reaction do you understnad?

~C
Riccis, thanks for the nice samples from the 24 Summilux showing it off to good advantage, a most interesting new lens!

FWIW, somehow I understand Olsen's reaction...:eek::angel:

Hi UA,

That's a very good question. I own the original Noct too and I have discovered the following.

The new Noct and the old Noct are two COMPLETELY different lenses! The new one is heavier but not an issue, it has a stiffer focusing motion I suspect to compensate for the extra heft, it has a built in metal lens hood (think 50 Sumilux), it is about the same width but feels slightly longer than the old one.

Now to what I consider to be the biggest difference. When I first heard about it I thought, why on earth would they make a new Noct? The old one was just fine and just how important can the extra less than half a stop be? Well it's not even about the extra speed, the old Noct, whilst great, used to be great wide open, albeit less than sharp but sharpness can be at times over-rated. But the main problem with it was that it had a very complex performance throughout the aperture range meaning that it didn't get exponentially better as one stopped down, for e.g, it would be kind of better at f/2.0 then get terrible at f/2.8 and wouldn't really be useful until about f/5.6.

Well the new one is superb at f/0.5, insane at f/1.4 then basically performs like a 50 Sumilux throughout the rest of it's range. It's Aspherical with less elements but it doesn't seem to have affected it's buttery draw wide open. It is truly a marvel of modern engineering and will not be staying at home at any point....EVER!

That's some high praise indeed! I love my Noctilux and use it regularly.

That said, I'd be very interested to see examples from the 0.95 throughout the range as I have found there to be two issues that stop me being able to go out with just the f1.0 for a full-day shooting (I usually shoot a 50, so either a 'Lux ASPH or 'Cron come with me as well):

1. The 'hole' below f5.6.
2. The difficulty focusing quickly (has this been improved?)

Although I can't really afford it at the moment, if they really have sorted out those things, I might have to start saving. That said, I wouldn't buy it INSTEAD of the f1.0, I love that (much maligned) lense's rendering wide open too much to see it go...

UA,
It is still quite stiff when focusing but honestly this does not as yet bother me that said, I've only had it for not even two full days so only time will tell. I tend to have all of my lenses loosened at Leica because like you I don't like lenses that have a stiff focusing motion. However they can only do this with lenses wider than the 50 focal length otherwise it gets tricky.

I love the original Notc too, the things I mentioned in the last post were issues but I personally didn't care. I love it even with it's quirks however, the new one draws even better wide open and is just in a different league altogether. Don't ask me how they've managed to achieve this but they have. Give me your email address and I will send you a couple of nonsense shots I took night before last at 0.95 & 1.4 respectively.

Man, the new 0.95 sounds amazing.
As an aside, I wonder what the numbers of production for the new Nocti are. Do you think they will make them in numbers like any other lens or mainly to order?

That's difficult to say TJV. I know that it was extremely difficult to make and that there are a total of 6 in existence. The other 5 are out with Leica employees being tested and I am the only person outside of the company that has one. In fact mine is a pre-production model that will be replaced in roughly two weeks from now with a production model. One thing I am pretty certain of though is that they will not be produced in high volumes, it just isn't realistic with a lens of that complexity and price.

I'd love to see some images from the 0.95, the 1.0 itself is legendary (sadly I've not had the opportunity to play with one yet).
Thank you for sharing those pics of the lenses and the MP, the MP looks like an absolutely beautifully finished instrument.

...can i see too?

...can i see too?

ascender,

would you be so kind as to email me some photos from these lenses?

your praise of the new .95 really gets me going. I love the OOF rendering of the Nocti -- can't imagine something being BETTER!??!?!

i use my nocti all the time with stage work and wonder how the new one fare's. my only problem with my nocti is that it has pushed my 75 lux away as they're so close on the m8. i can't wait for the M9 so I can rock the nocti on the FF and the 75 Lux on the M8. DR. Mandler would be proud!

anyhow -- im waiting and constantly harassing leica for access to the 21,1.4.
there's nothing that would add to my work like some shallow DOF wideness. I'm hopeing somehow somethign will pop up so i can bring it down to austin to shoot SXSW this week.

also -- if you're ever playing in CHI and would like to be shot on stage with your favourite camera's please give a shout! I shoot all M all the time!

Thank you CMDR and Ali Baba,

I made an earlier statement which I believe is incorrect. Both the Titan M7 and the Titan MP are lighter than their regular black or Chrome counterparts. Here are a couple of images I shot last night whilst out to dinner with friends in Paris. Both shot with the 0.95 and I believe the first one was wide open. What was cool was that the first one was shot at ISO 160 but I was at around 1/180 sec! The other was ISO 640 but that was more for effect than out of necessity

~C,

thanks for sharing these ! That looks very promising to me :) 1/180s @ ISO160...

Now I am very looking forward seeing some photos taken on film.

Cheers,

Gabor

It has definitely more modern look similar to new Summilux. I like it, seems to be universal workhorse and special lens in one.

If a $10000.00 f.95 lens can be regarded as a workhorse ... then this is just a runabout! (almost) :p

Now that is good news! I hope you'll perform in Canberra - we often miss out on the big acts, but we had Simply Red in town recently, to a sell-out house. If you come to Canberra I can guarantee at least two paying customers! :D
