Hey, I scratched some film recently. It sucks.
If you need a good free image editing program then try out the gimp.
Edit:If your trying to get detail out of the clear parts of the film, you can't.

I actually use gimp for a couple of years.
I am ashamed to admit but I kinda like the look it gave it.

You're right, colors and blur are your doing, but scratchs and dirt should never be. I've gotten scratched slides from Kodalux, of all places! Makes me mad too. The only thing they'll do is give you more film, which does nothing to restore photos you may never get a chance to shoot again.

thanks for the reassuring words - I still will take my bussiness elsewhere but I think something came out of them ruining my film

All processing is not equal. I had roller transport track marks one end to another. Think its fun retouching each print/frame with a brush and 50 dots. Never went back. I now only use a pro lab and am not sure if I remember where the retouching brushes are.
Use the clone tool. Select an area next to the scratch, then drag the tool along the scratch until to color need changing. Keep the brush small and soft edged, 10 px max. Enlarge the frame first { control + ] and use the hand tool to move it around. Depressing the space bar gets you the hand tool. Do one section at a time.
