Are they really that rare/ expensive? They're outa' sight in Japan, even in a very bad economy.

I want one, but they seem too dear for me.

I got lucky on eBay a year or so back but only with an FL mount one. (I would love an LTM mount one but no go.) I picked it up for a pittance - well under $100. I intended to use in on an FTb body but I now see some people advertising Canon to 4/3 mount adapters so will have to try it out on my Panasonic L1. (Wll not focus to infinity apparently but that's OK its mainly going to eb a portrait lens anyhow.)

Either you need to have money, or time and luck.
Some years ago I bought mine for 400 USD in nearly perfect condition. A couple of months later I saw one go for 200 EUR in German ebay. The seller didn't know what he have and announced it as a Leica M-lens (tight adaptor). I didn't bought it because I already had one. I should have had bid on it.

You're right--NONE of the above.

If the goal is to get a LTM tele that is light, then there are better options out there. If the main goal is to get a "rare" tele in LTM, then again there exist other options.

If the lens will be used for photography, then black versus chrome is a small issue considering the cost differences.

You may be right in terms of weight alone, but this "alternative" may need stopping down to f/8 - f/11 in close and middle distances, if it's not manually recalibrated, so a 100/3.5 will do better most of the time -- BTW I still haven't heard that a single J9 proved focussing precisely at *ALL* distances...

So it's no bad choice to vote for a CANON, in particular if you get one (in case of a CHROME 85/1.9 or 85/2.0) for 100 USD...

What kind of USER will buy a lens 1/7 stop faster for triple the price? Well, a user who either wants to use the lens mainly wide open, or want something special...

The one at KEH is gone. At that price, it is a real bargain. No wonder it's gone in a jiffy.

Looking at some of the prices in the links above, even the Canon 85mm f/1.5 LTM may seem like a more economical option. It's a brick to lug around though.

Cheers,

$600 is a decent price for that lens, in excellent condition. Lines up well with the price from KEH noted in a previous post. Also, the recent eBay one was from jiri_e in Japan, known to be a quality seller.
