I had one, in LTM. Was fine wide-open and close-up, and at infinity. I sold it after getting the Nikkor 8.5cm f2 in LTM. I picked up a '75 J-9 in COntax mount, had to add 0.5mm to the main shim. Seems fine on the Contax.
The reason why a J-9 would be off at some distances and not others: the focal length has to be off. Adjust the rear module, then him it. Kim Coxon does that when he adjusts J-9's. I've done the same with a few J-3's that were way off.
