I recently got a M4 and a 35/2 Biogon. Now I need something to carry it. I am thinking about something small to prevent my kit from being scratched when I put in my back pack along with my books. My back pack doesn't have a lot of pockets, and none of which fits the odd shape of the camera but the main compartment. Something with protection against impact would help too.

i use the domke F5B (if i remember the name correctly).
it seems a bit oversize until you also pack some extra film, a light meter, mobile phone, keys, ...

just right for me. but i do not use a backpack either.

cheers,
sebastian

I can highly recommend the Delsey Gopix 40:

Perfect for one M with attached small lens. Does not add much bulk, and yet the protection is very good. Detachable shoulder strap. Can be worn as a belt pouch. Good materials and workmanship. The best thing is the price, I paid 10 Euro in a store in Germany, on the net it seems like it can cost as little as 5.99 USD... you'd think it would come apart at the seems from just looking at it for the price, but the thing is: it is VERY nicely made. I almost felt ashamed paying so little.

It is so small it replaces a traditional "never-ready case", but offers good protection nonetheless. You can use it as a camera bag (it will fit some films on top of the camera), or just as protection when carrying it in other everyday bags.

The grey one looks nice, is unobtrusive and doesn't get all heated up in sunshine.
All the best, Ljós

Some more on the Delsey Gopix:

The padding is already good, I added some more at the bottom. The front (the lens side) is already extra protected because there are two small "pockets" (for a filter etc.) that add an additional layer of padding.

Did you think about an ER case ? The best/cheapest is the original Leica one (14870) that usually sells around for US 100 used on ebay.

Roland.

If you will be transporting it inside a backpack, I suggest you look at camera/lens wraps from Domke or David Honl. Padded and with fast velcro closures. I use these to wrap my gear for my carry-on bag for travel, then transfer gear to a camera bag (packed in checked suitcase) at destination. A 15" square wrap will cover and cushion a Leica M with 35mm lens, or you can wrap body and lens in separate wraps. However, I doubt you will be happy pulling your camera out of your backpack in active use unless you are a landscape photographer. Look at small shoulder bags like the Domke F-5XB.

Maybe this helps ? F5xa and 14870:

I searched for the perfect bag for a while. I do discreet street shooting and like to travel light so I don't carry a lot of gear and I found the best bags were the ones I already had. So I just bought a small two compartment Domke Insert and put it in my backpack. Works really well. Billingham has similar inserts.

It's good for storing your camera, not really ideal to work out of but I don't go fishing for stuff out of my bag, besides film, as I don't carry a lot of gear.

The main thing is the lack of padding for the bottom of the inserts which I solved by just putting a padded divider from an old bag I had on the bottom of the insert.

I walked into 3 canvas Domke 5XB's for 10 bucks each, they work well for the purpose you're thinking of. I use them similarly. They look like a small purse and the velcro bugged me however, so I removed the flap. Now they're just a small bag with a zipper on top, no velcro. Sits perfect in a backpack or shoulder bag.

wow! and it's made for rangefinders too!

Those of us who have been around for a while have answered these questions over and over. That was original a recommendation by Francisco to me..... way back when I had hair.

For small kit days, I just use a little Lowepro bag I picked up for $3 at a thrift store. It looks too much like a camera bag for my tastes but the size is right - it fits a small fixed lens rangefinder and a small folding camera with a few rolls of film thrown in. It is small enough to toss in a backpack.

It looked like it was meant for an older, bulkier digital camera. :)

How about a insert from domke (you can buy them from Amazon if you are in the US) and put it in your everyday bag? If you carry any bag when you are out anyway, this barely adds any bulk. I carry my M & one lens setup this way everyday, and my camera hasn't got any dings.
