It is small, and cheap.
Takes adequate pictures.

The Yashica T3 is often overlooked and therefore cheap. The later ones overshadow it but it's a pleasant camera with a decent lens on it.

These are not as cheap as they used to be, it seems that all of the Yashica T* compacts are suffering from "cult by association" syndrome.

No love here for the Konica C35 line of AF compacts? They even have a zone focusing model (EF3) that comes in different colors if you want to be a bit individualistic. And of course, the C35 Automatic is a gem of a camera, with a wider shutter speed range than the original.

If possible, throw out some books or swap your laptop for a lighter one 🙂. Five years ago I used to drag along a big 15" laptop that weighed about 4kg with its infernal giant power brick. Add a uni textbook to that and the weight and form killed any interest of taking pictures along the way to somewhere no matter if I had a camera with me or not :bang:

An M4 is actually in my daily carry that includes a 2kg laptop, some paperwork, sandwiches etc. I cover 7-8 km on foot per day in any weather. The weight of the M is not really a problem for me but the form factor can be. A small lens like an LTM Summaron f/3.5 or collapsible Elmar makes a big difference for packing the camera.

I haven't seen any film P&S cameras that I would like using instead of the Leica but among the ones I have not seen, the Ricoh GR series would be most promising, especially after owning their digital model since 2009. Alas, they are not cheap.

I'd recommend a Olympus 35RC. I'm not too sure if you can pick one up for a inexpensive price nowadays but there are always one going for cheap.

There are smaller and cheaper cameras, but I'm very happy with the Nikon FG with 50f1.8E combo. It never leaves me feeling under prepared, like many smaller cheaper cameras do at times.
