I'm trying to track down a lens hood for a Canon 50mm 1.5 Sonnar. I've seen a nice chrome square one, and would prefer that if its not impossible to find.

Any good places I should watch? Any current production shades that will work on it?

Thanks

I recently sold this:

It's a 40mm to Series VII adapter and a Series VII lens hood, native Canon 50/1.5. That's what you want. Hard to find, but something similar might be possible.

I was suprised at how long it was on sale on eBay, finally sold for GBP 65 with shipping included.

What Johan shows is the best target.

Might be easier to find the 40mm/Series VII adapter separately, and later use a different Series VII hood, for example from the Canon T50 or from an older Nikkor 50/1.4.

Instead of Series VII you can use 49mm filters - way easier to find than 40.

A 40->43mm step-up adapter with a generic, fenestred hood is a nice solution, too, and probably the cheapest solution.

I prefer the Walz vented hoods for mine. Heavily made, but going to be a little hard to find.

An alternative- get a 40mm to 43mm step-up ring, and get a heavystar vented hood. It also makes getting filters much easier.

Canon made both satin chrome and black versions of hoods for the 50/1.5. The series VII rings are interchangeable, but I prefer the screw-on type because it doesn't fall off as easy.

I would recommend the generic type as shown in the second picture, paired with a 40-40.5 step-up ring. This hood is pretty cheap, about 8 USD, (including cap) from eBay. The 43mm size as recommended by a previous poster is also a good idea.

I have never seen a square hood in 40 or 40.5mm sizes, but one may be available.

I'd really like to grab the Series VII hood Johan posted, even if to just complete the lens set.

Ideally, what I'd like to find is one like this (not square, rectangular, my bad :) ) Any idea on what it is?

And if thats difficult to find, or too pricey, some of the alternatives posted would work great. I appreciate the help guys, thanks!

The Nokton 50/1.5 for the Prominent is a bizarre filter size, "about" 44.5mm. It uses the same thread size as the Polaroid 180 and 195.

Bingo, I back tracked the image to the Flickr user, and in the caption; "E-P1 with Voigtlander Prominent Nokton 1.5/50mm"

Is it likely to fit on the canon 1.5/50mm, can be made to fit, adapters purchased, or should I focus on alternatives instead. I really like the look of the hood and would take the time/effort to track one down and adapt it its reasonable. But if not, I'll probably go with a vented hood, or another rectangular alternative.

I do want to find the 40mm original one as well.

Thanks again for all the info, very much appreciated.

I would go with one of the the alternative vented hoods. I have one of those Nokton hoods, and it is a lot bigger than the front of the Canon 50/1.5. Given what Brian said about the odd size of the filters that the Nokton accepts, an adapter may be hard to find.

It's a lens hood. No reason to overspend. Buy an adapter and then pick up a lens hood from "heavystar" on eBay.

Unless you're a collector. Then you'll want to find the original Canon hood.

Otherwise, save time and aggravation and buy something less expensive and less cumbersome.

dexdog, you're probably right. Its unfortunate because I really like the look of that hood on the chrome body and lens.

ZeissFan, I agree, but sometimes a little bling is nice. Rims and tires are designed to make the car go, but when you put a real nice set of rims on a car it can look great even sitting still ;)

But I think I'll have to forgo that hood based on everyones comments, and go with one of the functional but less visually appealing options. Or, buy Nokton 50/1.5 for the Prominent and mount it on the E-P1 (JK)!

I use a Canon lens hood with a screw on the side.

raid, do you find it marks the lens barrel at all, or is the screw behind a part that protects the lens barrel. I would image there is, but just want to confirm.

MCTuomey, thanks, I may just do that for now and keep an eye out for the other.

Thanks again for all the great info!

I just got through going through this exercise a month ago. I already had straight screw-in and push-on hoods, but I wanted a tilted hood that would block the viewfinder less. From Heavystar I got (as Brian Sweeney suggested) a 40 -> 43mm adapter and a 43mm tilted and vented hood that comes with a 52mm lens cap. Total cost $27.35. This set-up is way better then you realize. Obviously you have a choice of 40mm or 43mm filters, but this type set-up solves the eternal question of how do you use a polarizer on a rangefinder camera easily and cheaply. Simply put a 52mm polarizer on the front of the hood and look through the openings in the hood as you rotate the polarizer. You can also put a vented 52mm hood on the front of the polarizer to shade it. Yes, I realize you can't see the the effect of the polarizer on the whole view at once, but you can easily see enough of the effect on the sky, a glass window, water, leaves, and other surfaces to make it very useful.

Usually, on Canon hoods, the screw tightens a steel ring that sits on the entire lens barrel. So no marks.

It's only the slip-on 42mm series adapters that leave marks, the later clamp-on ones don't.

The vented Canon rectangular hood for 50/1.8 and 35/2.8 is the one I find most all-around useful. I also use it on the 50/1.5 and 35/1.8, no trouble on either. It's a great hood to use, very nice venting.

The "collector" side of me has both versions of the "correct" Canon 50/1.5 hood (chrome/screw and black/clamp). I got the second because the price was silly cheap, I'd already paid DAG to take out the filter ring ding so I could use the screw-in one.
