A few years ago I bought a used Epson R-D1 and it came with two straps. Once was the factory one and the other was a very thin leather strap which was very soft and extremely comfortable to use. I sold the camera with both straps the same way I got it. But have not seen that kind of strap in my later R-D1s and M8. I don't remember well but it was not as long as the factory M8 strap and was on the short side but was perfect for me. I don't know what brand is but if anyone has any idea of such a strap let me know.

I'm a big fan of the Artisan & Artist straps. Not inexpensive but the leather is great.

That *could* have been a Luigi strap. Click on Leicatime ad on the left side of the page.
I bought the Leica wide strap for $99 and can't recommend it because it has sharp metal parts!!!! (what the HELL were they thinking?!) that can and will scratch your camera. I had to put gaffer tape on mine. Sheesh

I use an Artisan & Artist cloth strap and am quite happy with it.

I have a Luigi strap and it's rather comfortable.
I used to use a Tamrac strap on all my Leica rangefinders, but I got one of Gordy's wrist straps that I now use on the M2, and a Leica wrist strap that I use on my M6. The Luigi strap goes well with the Luigi half-case for the M8.
I'll take a look at the Artisan & Artist straps, though, they seem to have a happy customer base.

The Luigi strap is very nice- I got one with my .58 M7. I put that strp on my F4 as I found it a little hot on the collar. I use the Domke straps with swivels and love them- simple, small, somewhat breathable and quite grippy- so they are great over the shoulder. I've not dinged up any of my cameras that I notice with the swivels, despite loading cameras in my bag on their backs and dropping the straps in no top.

After looking at the Luigi and A&A straps I believe that the one I used with the R-D1 was the A&A Kobe strap. Will order one and see what happens. Thanks for the help.

I own an A&A Kobe (which is very nice) and an A&A Silk cord strap, which is the most comfortable strap I have ever used. The A&A silk cord design also allows you to wrap it around your wrist for 'wrist carry". Another advantage of the A&A silk cord over their other straps is that it's a bit longer. A number of people that have seen my A&A silk cord strap on my M8 have ended up buying them for there cameras as its 'functionally' is near perfect.

I actually like the "stock" Leica strap that came with my black M8. It holds well, looks nearly invisible/anonymous, and after life with 1Ds and other SLRs, it feels like no weight at all. Also folds compactly when the camera goes into my bag.
A second choice would be my Domke "gripper" for pretty much the same reasons. I just ordered a Luigi half case (black, of course) and as an afterthought added a wrist strap with one of his metal clip fasteners plus two extra fasteners for one of my other favorite straps along with 2 of his leather protectors to keep the metal from scratching the body. There are times when I've got my smallish bag on my shoulder anyway, in which case, I've no need for a second strap around my neck. The wrist strap is adequate to hang on to. But then, for times I want to move around without the bag, it's good to have a neck strap. I'm hoping the clip on / clip off will give me that flexibility. I'll report the results.

Few beat the standard strap IME

the two best straps I have used in terms of not slipping off my shoulder are the standard leica ones (which are adjustable in length for the original query) and the Upstrap. All others I have tried slip off all the time when used over one shoulder. The Domkes are OK and the neoprene optech are nice with heavyer cameras than the M8.

$99 for a strap!?
Try a Domke Gripper, there is no other.

You might want to look at the Leicagoodies STRAP. It is very comfortable, lets you shoot quickly and inexpensive. You can find it here: http://www.leicagoodies.com/
