Looks like an honest listing of a "Freak" S

George, the painted finish does look beautiful but look closely at the leather. It's not as well done as it should be at the edges, IMO.

Pretty.
I think, back in the day, that LIFE magazine special-ordered about 20 black Nikon S's for its staff.

I'm pretty sure the black finish is just painted, not "anodized" as claimed in the ad.

It does look nice in the photos, but without knowing what's under the paint, it's impossible to predict how well it will last. (For example, was the chrome finish deplated to get down to the bare brass, then the brass primed and painted? That's how the factory would do it. If the chrome finish was just sanded off, that's not quite the same, and if the black paint was just painted over the chrome, ewww...)

I agree about the leather. In fact, if I were going to adulterate the camera in the first place, I'd put different leather on anyway; I don't much care for the grain of that leather.

As for how the paint wears, if it wears like iron then it's perfect for FrankG; if faids quickly then it belongs to Steph!

Hard to tell from the Photo's: but the leather looks like it was carefully removed and then put back on after painting. The Nikon S was the last Nikon to use real leather. The corner that Walker noticed may be the edge of the old leather not quite fitting on properly. Just a guess.

I think this is legit and the listing honest.

Legit dealer from New York area, been in the business for a long time. I see them Advertize in Shutterbug Mag. for the last 10 years.

I tell you one thing this paint job looks awefully close to a Shintaro Job.
What do you think Brian?

Definitely a legit seller. Brooklyn Camera's been around a lot more than 10 years. I bought most of my equipment from them by mail order from overseas in the late 1980s - early 1990s. They were nice folks.

I know the high bidder. I am not going to comment until the auction is over.

He is a fellow RFF'r.

I will not be bidding against him.

Now you understand...Why would we educate a 20 year camera-shop...If he doesn't know what he is got?
I can comment...to his advantage....but why?....I am not goimg to volunteer...why should I?
to run the price up??
nobody should do it unless their asked...

Regarding that camera shop: I really like those guys. It is a family business and Matt Duren helps run the place. Several years ago, I looked at a Nikon F "Apollo" body with motor plate. The SN is 73039xx, very low for an Apollo style. Matt looks it all over, says "I can do $100, advance is a little sticky". He knew what he had, and what he paid, and that I had bought from him before.

Sold for $788.

I have a soft spot for Brooklyn Camera. They were some of the nicest folks I ever dealt with by telephone order when I lived overseas. I wasn't a big customer, but they spent a lot of time with me on the phone describing the merchandise and kept an eye out for newly arrived items I might be interested in. I bought my SP from them. And I still regret turning them down when they offered me first dibs on a black 85mm f/2 that had just arrived in the store.
