DP review has a video that shows how much better the new Sigma MC-11 adapter as compared to the metabones smart adapter for Canon. The Sigma one supports both SA and Canon mount lenses. Very impressive.. They talked mainly about the Sny A7r2 and a6300. I wonder how well they do an first gen a7 bodies and the a6000. The Sigma website info show support for the Nex family as well..but w/o phase detect cells like nex5n, probably not as fast.

saw the news also and its interesting, although "older" cameras like a6000 and A7 may have contrast AF only. Sigma made Sony adapter for their own lenses, guess thats why its faster than third party versions. shame it didn't come for Sigma Nikon lenses, only SA and EF mounts. wonder if there's any technical limitation for it? many newer Sigma lenses for Nikon didn't have old manual aperture control, so that cant be the reason.

Someone mentioned Sigma bought the rights to the Canon af mount system when the created their SA mount.. The only real diff is the SA got moved to the 1 o'clock position for mounting, so Canon AF lenses could not be used directly. So once they figured out their needs for SA mount, it was no issue to create a Canon version.
But yes..it would be great to have a Nikon version. Sigma knows the Nikon af protocol, so it is possible. Maybe if enough people ask, it may happen.

Btw.. Metabones better up their game and rethink their pricing.. IMHO, this is gonna cut not their sales for the Canon adapter..

Very good strategic move by Sigma. With their art lens reputation and the lack of native AF lenses for Sony FE, it will bring more sales to them.

If 'clunky' means 'like native' then yes.
The question that isn't fully answered, unless I missed it, is whether this will work with all Canon glass, not just Sigma.

Clunky because you'll be using huge lenses on a tiny body...

Native FE lenses are not that much smaller especially the new G series. Most of the Sigma art lenses will definitely look clunky.. The range of existing lenses that are available for fe as well as e mount just went up a lot though. Of the existing Sony FE mount lenses, to me, only the 35f2.8 and 55f1.8 are not only good to great performers but I like both the size and weight. I would also tend to feel the sigma QA is a bit better than the Sony brand in general and the art a step above...IMHO.

There are no decent telephotos for e-mount. I long for a 300/2.8 e-mount. So, this is quite interesting for me.
I just wish it was for Nikon (I have too many Nikkor lenses).

Good to know thanks. It is not that much better than the canon version and the problem is that is a very useful range and even the sony 24-70 f4 does not perform very well either. 24-70 2.8 g master is so expensive...

It's my understanding that these new adapters will only allow the phase detection and other advanced focus features of the newer cameras with Sigma's own lenses, not Canon glass. So if you have Sigma EF lenses (or Sigma SA lenses with the SA version) cool- but if you are hoping for real full function and fast AF with Canon lenses (never mind Nikon) you are still out of luck. Am I wrong on that? I don't know how or why that would be the case, but that point seemed to be present, but buried, in the announcement I saw...

The website info certainly implies that for sure, since only Sigma lenses are listed. Until this adapter gets into the hands of independent tester, what level of reality check will the be for Canon native lenses :
- only work w/ contrast?
- only some phase detect functionality
- no continuous af
- no predictive
- no support at all
Who knows... I would suspect no support at all would be the least unlikely, but it is definitely a possibility that cannot be denied.
For me, I have no Canon lenses but plenty of SA mount.. Only a couple that are on the list.. Most of mine are the older ones prior to the Art and Contemporary series.

Both dpreview and Brian Smith have posted updates that match Jason Lainer on the pdaf support on the mc11.

Panning the camera from center to edge of display screen, the object remains in focus. Something that dpreview demonstrates in their video that the metabones smart adapter cannot do.
