Loose push on filters.

Hello all,

I've just bought a couple of 30mm push on filters and a metal lens hood for my Agfa Super Solinette. All are marked as being for 30mm, but the yellow filter is rather loose, the green filter a little less so and the hood is barely any better, and if I put either filter on and then add the lens hood they fall of if I tilt the camera even slightly.

So I was wondering if anyone knows of a simple and 'safe' way of tightening up the fit on them?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Try some sticky tape around the inside rim to reduce the diameter and provide some friction..

With most push on filters you can carefully bend the tabs to adjust the fit. Go slow and a very little bend at a time--if you move the tabs too much at once, they may break off.

Try rolling the filter's camera fitting (often perforated) along a table edge or the like. Use gentle pressure till you find what works.

Felt tape. It will both slightly reduce the inner diameter and protect from scratches.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Hmmm. me and sitcky stuff don't really go together too well. My airfix kits only ever looked like lumps of glue with a few plastic bits attached.

Double Hmmm. Me and bending things don't really go together too well. My middle names could be 'it just snapped off in my hand'.

So it looks like a bit of thinking is going to be involved, which will be quite difficult as I've only got 3 braincells and 2 of them are always thinking about 'you knoiw what'.

I've had a fiddle with the filters and hood, by doing a tiny bit of 'bending' on the tabs(?) and the B+W Yellow and the hood are quite snug now. The nameless green (which looks like the Actina made/labelled filters that I've seen), isn't quite so good. It stays on but is still a tidgy bit loose, especially with the hood on.

I don't recommend bending, as you're likely to overdo it.
The best recommendation is to roll the slotted tabs along a hard table edge (e.g. granite kitchen counter), it order to gradually and evenly push them inwards. If you just bend one tab, you'll likely overdo it. Then, if you work it outwards, you'll overdo it in the other direction. Constant working of the metal back and forth will produce metal fatigue and the tab will just break off eventually.

For the B+W filter and the hood, I held a metal ruler across both tabs on one side and very gently pressed down and tried them on the lens and then did the same for the two tabs on the other side, so I did manage it without causing any damage.

The nameless green (which looks like an Actina made one to me) filter, has 3 narrow tabs which meant I had to use the edge of the ruler to press down. While this has worked, it's fitting is stilla tiny bit lose, so I've decide to stay away from that type.
