Losing your Lens Cap - obvious solution!

This is so obvious that it must have been on the forum someplace before!
I've got several very loose lens caps and you know what will happen! I'll find that Ive lost one on a 'field' trip.

So I could tie them on - tried that and it works but ...

Instead I cut a 1" long piece of 'interslice' foam and stuck that on the inside rim. I positioned it carefully so that its on the first bit of the cap to be positioned over the lens. This enables it to be compressed as the rest of the cap is 'hooked' on. Looking at the 'Olypmus' on the cap front I have the foam at the bottom.

So far so good.

Adjust the width of the foam and the length to suit your camera cap, and how tight a fit you want.

That's a good idea. I might try it with some generic adhesive foam. My lens caps always seem to end up migrating to my desk or my nightstand via my shirt pocket. Those elastic Cap Keepers are beneath the dignity of my chrome cameras. 🙂

I can confess how I work around lost or non-existing caps - sometimes replacements cost more than camera itself. Because I need caps only when camera sits in storage, I wrap bubblewrap around lens barrel and then wrap around scotch tape. So I have cheap and handy lens cap/case which protects whole lens when carrying camera in generic bag !

I know it works only with cheap fixed lens RF's but it does 🙂

I have used some generic foam as shims to tighten Hama hoods. Method works but the best place for a cap is actually in your pocket. If you have a filter on the lens then you actually have a shade on the camera though it is important to remember when carrying the camera about on a sunny day to keep the f stop at f/16.

I had a similar problem with a Canon 35mm 2.8 lens cap. It's the vintage chrome-looking cap with stamped Canon logo (actually aluminum, I believe). The original black velvety looking stuff around the perimeter of the cap had become worn or at least way too compressed to stay on tightly. I was looking for some type of felt at Walmart (preferably black), but instead I found some velveteen hair ribbon. It's slightly too wide to fit into the cap, so I had to trim it longitudinally. But the thickness is perfect. I scraped the old stuff out, and put the new stuff in, with a little Elmer's Glue. It's working perfectly, and looks identical to the original stuff.

I got a CV 58/1.4 SL II lens from Stephen and the overpric.... CV lens hood for it. I took the hood to the grocery store down the block and found that the plastic lid from a can of baking soda worked great. So for $2.85 I now have two caps (one in the drawer) that fit perfectly. Fisher nuts were my second choice but fit too tight. Take your lens or hood to the store and see what fits. Buy two of what ever and you are set. I find Hersheys Chocolate cans fit very well on 72mm filters (my 180/2.8).
