Love/hate reading RFF?

I love reading the threads at RFF. Sometimes I feel like, what the hey, I can't believe people are writing/fighting about this, but I have to say, I really love reading. Occasionally I even contribute. But there must be LOTS of lurkers. Or old timers who hold back (often for good reasons). Just wanna know, don't you love it?

Sometimes I cannot stand the threads. Utterly pointless half the time. Or the remarks are IMO simply ridiculous. Sometimes we actually get posts talking about actual imagery/conceptual work versus just gear. That's usually pretty nice.

How can I hate, what gives me more information? And sometimes, when I´m wondering why someone posted a question or thesis, I have to remember that some twenty years ago I was a newby too. So I try to learn from the experienced and try to help the questioners, if possible.
And, just to say it once again, I´ve never visited a forum with more competent and relaxed members than RFF!

I don't know that I hate anything about RFF. There are threads or individual posts that I may disapprove of. Sometimes just a title will tell me I probably won't be interested. An example would be "Which Sumicron should I buy." I don't mind someone posting that if they want to know, it just isn't of any interest to me personally.

But hate? Naw.

And as Petronius said, in general I like all the people here and find their views and experience helpful.

There is great information here and Ive learned a lot. The general populous is pretty intelligent and interesting too. However there can be a lot of somewhat inane threads and a lot of the time I feel guilty with myself for spending more time on forums talking about photography than outside making photos. I don't hate or love it, I guess I'm indifferent for lack of a better word.

Virtually everything I've learned about photography ... I've learned here. Three years ago I didn't know what depth of field meant and had no concept of what focal length meant in regard to a prime lens, let alone what a prime lens actually was. I was the ultimate noob and not once was I ever put down for asking a naive question.

I agree some of the posts are a bit over the top at times but the general helpfulness of the majority of members here is outstanding! 🙂

there is a point where the information that you are gaining is pretty useless... sorry, how many new old cameras do you have to learn about, lust after etc. etc. etc... when shooting photos is really what is important to you? I guess it is kind of an obsession... and RFF is no worse than television... so why fight it?

I think I should have added a "love or hate, just makes me want shoot more" option. That's actually what I feel most of the time, and I think most people here are that way, too. Good or bad, this forum is an inspiration to go out and take more photos!!!

I remember dabbling at p.net initially and all I can say about that place is I suspect a lot of wide eyed innocents have been put off photography for life by some of the arrogance there!

I love the Gallery section the most. As the saying goes, a picture says a thousand words. You can go on and on about which lens is the best, but in the end, the pictures speak for themselves.

There is so much good work in there by the RFF members, it has inspired me to go out there and shoot, rethink about my approach to composition, and let me know that, its not always about the camera 🙂

Generally enjoy what I read on RFF but it has it's ridiculous moments. I try to remind myself not to mistake opinions for fact or information.

After living in New York, then Berkeley California for most of my life, I moved to the opposite end of the philosophical spectrum (I Love my children). For 3 years I felt like a missionary trying to convert humans that had been isolated for a millennium to, well, anything! First is the language barrier and then it is the closed mind that refuses to see anything beyond their immediate world.

Then I found RFF. I found it looking for information on repairing one of my range finder cameras. I found much more. The vast differences of opinions, cultural, philosophies and beliefs in a community that has an open mind for learning, teaching and accepting, truly a world community.

I embrace the diversity of everyone you. I love every point of view, discussion, and rants. From extremely serious to the absurd, and not once have I felt I was lambasted for my rants.

And I have learned to expand my art. I feel that being part of this community I contribute to some one out there just as I gain from the whole. I have once again started to experiment with black and white. Studying the extreme contrast images that just seemed so wrong to me.

I so enjoy the Gallery! Images from some of the best and up and coming in the world. There is just so much to learn and absorb.

There are some real experts here and this reader feels fortunate to have these talented minds available. Need to weed thru some fluff, but the goods are worth it. I am extremely grateful to those who have inspired me through their words and images.

I've been posting here for awhile but I gave RFF a miss for the first eight months of the year. It was interesting to see the same issues and questions over and over just as before when I came back, people still not using the search engine (or Google search), the obsession with gear. Nice to see some old friends still here though. 🙂 I like the gallery best, still some great shots being posted on a regular basis that you can learn from...

Ive been posting a little less and reading more lately, but my day isnt complete without RFF. I always say I going to take a break when it gets a little crazy here, but I can't stay away. So much good info and friendships.

RFF is a bit of an oasis for me; there is no local community of photographers where I spend most of my year. So, when I need info, comradeship, inspiration I stop here. Even the silly-ness is good.
