Ok, end of the year - time to summarize. 😉

I like (and even love) some of the photos here - great talented people here. Well some are, anyway.

I like to have so much useful info about RF cameras and lenses, but I dislike that it makes me spend more and more money on different RF toys. 😉

I dont like certain "political correctness" that comes with photos critigue/comments. No matter how terrible a posted photo may be it still gets good reviews. Sorry, but many photos do suck, even ones that come from the "experts" and "pros". I think if people are willing to post pics here, they are willing to deal with TRUE critique.
I realize - tastes are different, yet we can agree that some photos stand out and some are just "blah". Yet we still say - "nice photo - good job!". Shouldn't we be more honest with each other, even if it hurts some feelings. I wouldn't mind is someone said that my photo sucks. Just explain why you say that.



And finally to piss some people off - while I really like and respect most people here, I really HATE when people start talking about some personal issues/problems that are not camera/photo related. All those threads - about how bad life is,can't find a job, dont make enough money, can't afford this or that - you know - keep it to yourself. Everyone has problems. Everyone finds ways to deal with them. I has some tough times in my day. Everything I have I made myself. If i can do it - everyone can - believe me. But I think this is NOT the place for it. Do I sound insensative - maybe, but I'm just tired of this crying and moaning. Everyone makes their own fortune .
Sorry if this offends someone, but it's been building up.

I don't intend to stop using film, but I have a digital P&S that I often take as my only camera, or for snapshots of the family. I am not crazy hearing about digital RF. But then I'm not crazy hearing about Leicas either.

I think we are both just going to have to get over it. 😉

And why are you complaining? when I first joined, the talk was all about FSU and fixed lens rangefinders. 😀 I only got an FSU about a year ago. That's nobody's fault but my own.
 
...I am not shure if this is the right thread for this. Regarding digital cameras and DSLR, I do most of my shooting using a Canon DSLR, and most of my gallery shots have been taken with my 30D. I realize this is a rangefinder forum, so my Leica III shots are expected rather than DLSR ones, but I also realize that the whole rangefinder experience is more suited to street shots / candids, which is the genre of photography I am very interested right now. And have seen excellent pictures of it in here, and that´s the reason I joined in the first place. At the end it is just about the pictures, right?

Then again, there are some really great and very experienced shooters here, the learning never stops, RFF is a great forum to have coffee with in the early morning, or browse when waiting for compilers or software test runs 🙂 Who else would understand the "perfect kit" ? 🙂

READ THE ARCHIVES PEOPLE!
Although the search function is virtually useless, the archives are all there. It's really rewarding to go back to them. I've spent as much time in them as reading the new threads.

Well, Roland, I too have felt that sadness at the loss of older members even though I wasn't around since the beginning. I was pretty upset at the departure of a couple people over the past year, but really didn't know how to express it. Maybe it's a good time to say thanks to those people who have stayed on, in spite of it all.
 
Well, obviously I don't love all the threads. But I usually find some threads that I enjoy a lot, so I keep coming back.

To be honest, this is the only forum for which I've ever developed a habit.

There are some very talented folks here, and also knowledgable ones. And yes, there are some hotheads, and some who are pompous. It's just like a cross-section of society really, but all people who like photography in one aspect or another.

Also, I would say the site is very well managed, and moderated. Yes, I know the searcdh function doesn't work perfectly. Anyway, the technical and administrative factors cannot be overlooked.

I find most threads completely pointless to me but how could I hate something I do only because I want such as reading a newsgroup? If anyone heat something can simply avoid doing it...

Given the choices, I had to cast an "Indifferent" vote. "Love" and "Hate" are terms too strong to use in this context. Of all the foto fora I've checked in with over the years, RFF is the one I enjoy the most. The reason is simple: I enjoy the people here more than anywhere else.

Sure there are a number of threads and individual replies I smile impolitely at and proceed to ignore. Absolutely there are personalities here that I would rather not engage. Indeed there's a lot of real information that simply doesn't pertain to my interests.

However, the quality and respectful tenor of the discussions; the generosity shown in not only sharing of information, but in passing on "no longer loved" gear and providing real aid to the members here; the mostly healthy regard shown to each of us all add up to one of the warmest and most useful foto communities on the web. I appreciate this space.

i'm a pentax guy but i love reading about gear. after lurking on dpr a lot. and while the trolling is fun to read at times it's gotten kind of boring. after getting bored of that forum i noticed that this forum is particularly active. and as well because of the strong leica base of the community, honestly people are more into their gear and the resulting output when they've paid a lot or if it's really old and to me it's fun to read. rangefinder talk is the most "conoisseur-ish", it is the king of gear talk.

i do read a lot here for the wealth of film articles, assorted other gear, the classifieds, the really big gallery. i feel like i've barely scratched the surface of what this forum has to offer.

in the end i just lurk because i do not have a rangefinder (cannot convince myself two days consecutively that i need one) i am reluctant to contribute.

The more we share with each other the more we learn as a whole. Even if I do not agree with what you say, it is a point of view, and may be one others here never heard before. So if your posting reaches even one, it is something new for thought somewhere. If you know and share something with a friend, your less likely to want to kill him.
 
Why hate reading the forum where there are lots of good info and excellent pictures?
Sometimes a thread derives to other topics related to the original, however it isn´t difficult to skip the unrelated or improper posts if needed. Then no reason to complain.
This is a photography forum where all people discuss about it, disregarding from where is or how old is. That´s why I enjoy reading it.

I agree with Ken Ford; I don't understand why people get so upset about gear threads. Don't read 'em and go poke around in the Gallery!
I agree with Keith; we should (and mostly do) have patience for those new to photography or new to rangefinders.
From what I understand the forum search has never worked very well here. I don't know if it's fixed yet but I don't mind the repeat of topics and queries. Just because I read a certain thread last year doesn't mean new member X did, or could find it easily through a search.
I miss some of the "old timers" who were regular friendly faces when I first joined. We used to have more ladies too, and I miss them.
I don't like how some members state their viewpoints as indisputable fact. That kind of attitude belongs elsewhere. None of us is right 100% of the time except for me.

This pretty much sums up my view, too. All I can add is that, while I miss some of the members who have stopped posting or moved on, I've made some friends through this forum, and those friendships (cyber or otherwise) I treasure. There are some great folks here (still!), who are generous and patient in passing along their experience, information, and spirit. RFF is still a pretty nice place to hang out.
 
Can't say that i "love" reading it. It's more a 'need' or compulsion - something that fills a void. Either because i'm bored, or need a break from work, or because i'm constantly searching for the Magic Bullet. Every once in a while, i find a post or a photo that demonstrates some elusive quality that i'm looking for/trying to capture/create in my own pictures. Sometimes that quality is directly a result of a particular piece of glass or film, and i'm eternally hopeful that i can acquire that element and get it to perform the same feats.

Most of the time, those elements go onto a Wish List of sorts. Sometimes, i actually do buy them. But, i don't actually spend enough time shooting to ever realize those benefits. And, even though i understand that situation, timing, and subject matter are far more important than a lens, i only have control over what i can buy....

Basically, i'm obsessed with photography, and enchanted by cameras. Although i'm sometimes disappointed that there are no new threads of interest to me, i always have to check to be sure i'm not 'missing' something.

Lastly, it is a point of emphasis for me that i give back as much information as i have received on various forums. I've bought/used a lot of different gear, and forum advice/info has been valuable, so i like to share whatever i might know/feel about the experiences i've had.
 
I guess the question that I would put to the group is "how many folks in your daily acquaintance are interested in the stuff discussed on the forum?" In my case, my many otherwise excellent friends and family couldn't give a monkey's. That is the beauty of the Internet -- the barriers to like-minded folks discussing areas of common interest across geographic barriers are lower than they have been in human history. I see this with my father-in-law, for instance, who is a classical music fiend and who, like me, lives in rural Vermont. He is able to share his passion for that field with folks who care deeply about it in ways that would have been impossible even just 15 years ago. It is quite amazing.
