LR3 vs .erf - help, please.

I have read through all, I hope, postings on this matter, but cannot find a solution or have overlooked it.

Up until now I have been favouring converting my R-D1s files in PhotoRAW. There is a brilliance I simply adore. Trying to get a handle on my many pictures I have moved to testing LR3 trying to find out how it fares with raw-file conversions (I was not pleased with LR2).

I have three different files:
-Nikon.nef which seems to work well when camera calibration is done with the new beta-profiles.
-Sigma.x3f is a tougher nut, but I may be getting there.
-But my beloved .erfs are, well, in case any children are reading, disappointing…

Has anybody been able to convert .erf-files in LR3 with even some resemblance to the clarity in PhotoRAW? If so, how?

It does not really matter how I try to port them into LR3. .erf, .tiff (different formats) – they all look downright ugly.

I use Aperture I´m afraid. Quite happy with it wrt RAW image processing both for my Nikon and Epson. Now that you mention it, I´ll think I´ll make a comparison with PhotoRAW (which I´ve never really used) and see if I´m missing out on something.
 
I haven't processed .erf files before but I'm pretty fluent in LR. If you'd like to send a few, and how you would like them to look after conversion, I'd be happy to give it a shot.

I would be very interested in hearing your comparison between Aperture and PhotoRAW.

That is very generous of you Chris. Do you have PhotoRAW? Otherwise I will have to find a way to show how it looks inside PhotoRAW. The Windows snipping tool is not too far from it.

Oh, and can your email take 8-9 mega-files? I would not want to throttle your inbox :angel:

I did some Epson files in LR3 for the first time last night, I didn't see anything unusual, they all looked good.

You might try resetting the LR profile for your Epson images, maybe you accidentally hit an errant key and it was set as a default setting?

Hi Larry - forgive me my ignorance, I am not quite sure I follow you.

I have installed the beta 2 camera profiles. And they show up in the Develop/Camera Calibration/Profile-section. I can choose between ACR 2.4, ACR 4.4, Adobe Standard, and Adobe Standard beta 2 [surprisingly the beta 2 file is from 8-8-2008 and the standard from 31-10-2008]. I see no difference between the two adobe standards.

Are these the profiles you are referring to? In that case [to my eyes] there is a huge difference between what you see in PhotoRAW and what you see in LR3.

Sorry for the late reply. Not sure if you are still having LR issues. But I was referring to the "default camera settings" that most Adobe products use. In ACR or LR, you can reset camera defaults (in case you accidentally hit a key) or, you can create a custom default setting for each camera, so that your custom settings are applied each time a particular camera's files are loaded into ACR or LR.
 
Thanks Larry for the explanation. Well, I am still having "LR" troubles and is using default camera settings.

I've installed LR3 a couple days ago. tried working on some files, mainly iso1600 ones... I haven't noticed any huge difference, although the images does seem to have less noise. For pushed shots (+2 or +3EV) it made a huge difference, though. I've never used Photo RAW, might give it a try to see if I'm missing something too 🙂
 
Hi, I use both Epson PhotoRaw and LR3 for my R-D1 Raws, I think PhotoRaw is a little bit better, specially for noise @ 1600, but LR is more convenient (gallery, etc.) so I use PhotoRaw when pictures are "difficult"

Could I persuade you to share your "typical" (if you have) settings for converting .erf files in LR3?
