So, how long do you think these scanners practically last before they're screwed? I suspect the SA-21 film loader would be the first thing to break down, due to the motor. Any reliability reports in the field?

Don't know about the 5000, but my 8000-ED is 7 yrs old and has scanned many thousands of negatives with no problems at all.
I scanned about 300 rolls with my (now sold) Coolscan V without any problems at all, and only sold it to upgrade to a Coolscan 5000. As expected, my Coolscan 5000 is going strong too.

I imagine that some moving part would be the first to go, but my 5000 is still whirring alone error free!
