LTM 'refresher course'

Having got rid of my M I have got the ltms out of storage. After a prolonged sleep some of the shutters sound vert dry and rough. Rangefinders, bilnds etc all appear OK.

I haven't been inside one of these for 30 years or so...so which is the best internet resource for guidance for a shutter service these days?

My suggestion would be to contact RFF member wolves3012. I've found him very knowledgeable and helpful, on such matters.

I'm sure there are many other knowledgeable members on here - but I don't recall which ones. 😱

Thanks, will have a look at these, the rough sound seems to come from the second blind at slower speeds (not slow speeds).

I'm flattered but I've actually only, very partially, dismantled a IIIC, once only and my own camera. They are, however, very similar to the early FED and Zorki models, of which I've had a fair few apart.

If you PM me your email address, I'll send you a copy of a PDF I downloaded, some years back, on the screw-mount Leica. I have no idea where I got it or where it originated but it does have some reasonable detail in it. If the 'dry' sound comes from the second curtain mechanics, it's quite likely to be from the tension roller and a tiny drop of oil in the strategic spot will sort that out. You'd only need to remove the shell from the crate to get at it (from memory!). I've had the same on several Zorkis.

Wich model you are trying to demolish? Only joking. There is a big difference between the models I, II, III, IIIa, IIIb and the models Ic, IIc, IIIc, If, IIf and IIIf.

In my opinion the group I, II, III, IIIa and IIIb is much easier to work on.
Begin with a model I.

Order the books by Nobbysparrow (eBay). They are very useful if you want to do the more difficult things such as cleaning the lens elements.

I have been sharpening my adze ready for just such a project. After a long period of treatment my PCSD has receded meaning I have just about got over the Contax I.

With a serial number of 24650 the Leica in question is early and now a black II without synchronisation. Peter at CRR serviced it around 25 years ago and it has sat in the cupboard ever since with predictable results.

I have found my bottle of watchmakers oil, I know that somewhere I have the spanner for the finder lenses...somewhere...somewhere...

I understand it cost some money to send M even to basic CLA. Closer to 300 USD with shipping.
But why not pay small money and get LTM serviced, good for another twenty years?

It is legit, one of the co-workers just recently send his LTM to this service.

Many thanks to wolves3012 whose diagnosis was 100%, a tiny drop of oil and it is happy now.

The camera is signed inside by various repairers over the years but the oldest I could read was T Joyce Sept 1980.

The pressure plate was a bit unfamiliar. It has a hole for collimation which makes it early. The body doesn't but I suspect it was replaced when converted. What seems a bit odd is the way in which the plate is located. From memory newer ones are a circle with 'four corners' which I would have expected with a replacement body.

Quick snap of the camera, 'black nose' Summar has a bit of paint floating around inside but it is in front of the iris so that should be fairly straightforward to remove.

This is what I would describe as a normal pressure plate. Ignore attractive scratch!

And this is the next one sorted, the shutter dial looks proud but is in line with the winding knobs. Admire all scratches!
