I recently promised Gordon Coale that I would post some stuff that may be useful to owners of Barnack style Leicas.

The files are huge - far too big to even think about posting here. So far I have managed to upload the following to Megaupload so that folks can download them directly (I don't have any dedicated web space):

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=93ZLBSVM - dismantling shutter operation & rangefinder - 38Mb from Alii Service Notes

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HT3AVC92 - Focal Plane shutters, generic & Leica see how it works and how to repair- 26Mb from Alii Service Notes

And the one for Bill:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SJB24P64 - Leitz Leica IIIF service manual - 14.6 Mb (added 31 March 14:57 local)

I also have the full Leica IIIf service manual, which is about 150Mb, I will try to get that up later today (will take about 2 hours to upload, even with my 2Mb broadband).

These should last for a few weeks if folk are downloading them.

Sorry the quality is not 100%, but they are readable and give some good pointers - grab and enjoy ;)

edited to add IIIf manual

PLEASE post that IIIf manual. I've got a line on a seriously trashed IIIf and if _I_ can do the work, it makes my price numbers quite different... ;)

Bill,

I recently used the manual, and the shutter info from one of the above to bring a IIIf back from the brink - bought for $110 including post from US to UK - it's currently on sale in a London window for £300 ($500)!!

I'll post the url once it has finished uploading.

Hi John,
If you want a more permanent home for them, I may be able to find the space on my site to host them. If you can send them to me on CD, I should be able to clean them up and reduce them to postscript and them put them on the site.

Kim

Kim,

Got my sizing wrong - the IIIf manual is only 14.6 Mb, it's the whole "Restoring Antique Cameras" that's 149Mb (doh!).

I would still like to talk to you about your Canon 50mm f2.8 if you get chance.

The complete IIIf information...

The complete IIIf information...

The IIIf manual runs 123 pages, but includes the If and IIf parts lists and exploded views. If you just need the full IIIf manual, you can print pages 1-88. I did double sided laser, and they are very respectable. The original sheets weren't the greatest to begin with, and the data is there.

The article on the screw mount shutter covers the IIIf specifically, and looks to be very valuable, as well. If it offers just one tip, it's worth the 20 page print job. The article on focal plane shutters is a relatively general one, explaining the principles and construction, and running to 17 pages.

Another binder for the bookshelf, and I bet it earns its place. We owe John Neal a debt of gratitude for sharing some hard to find knowledge with all of us.

Thanks Harry,

Please ure to be of service.

I have one more to scan "Advanced Leica Screwmount Repair" by Ed Valera. This is from a camera repair course originally run in the 1950's and goes beyond the other 3 with some hard to learn tips and tricks. No promises on timing, but watch out in the next couple of weeks - I need to get my flatbed fixed first.

Thank you for providing file. I had, however, forgotten what a PITA megaupload (actually any of those services) really is. Still, I'll get the files downloaded and be happy.

Thanks again!

William

John, perhaps I'm dense but when I click on the links it shows the file name but offers no way to download anything. What am I doing wrong?

There's a ad with a close button. Close the add and when the timer finishes counting down, you can download.

If you're at work, be aware there is a pop-up with some almost nude teenie girls... (defeated firefox + adblock too)

Walker, there is pop up add that comes up in front of the download timer and icon. The pop up was for some swinger type dating service when I hit the above link for the IIIf service manual.

Just move the pop up add with the cleavage off to the side while waiting for the count down. Wait for the timer to say download. The IIIf file is huge .pdf file. It is 123 pages long.

Thanks, guys. I have all three downloaded now. When I clicked on "Download" before, the pictures of the girls came up but no download window. This time the window came up.

I should soon have the files on my website in a more user friendly format. The focal plane shutter one is "done". It has come down from 26Mb to 1.45.

Kim

A quick update. The 3 files that John supplied and one for M series cameras can now be found here. I have reworked a couple of them to make the size more reasonable.

dismantling shutter operation & rangefinder - 38Mb from Alii Service Notes - now 1.47Mb

Focal Plane shutters, generic & Leica see how it works and how to repair- 26Mb from Alii Service Notes- now 766Kb

The Lica IIIf manual is still about 14Mb but it is 128 pages - at least you won't have any annoying nude pop ups and waits.

Enjoy
Kim

Kim,

Many thanks for providing a home for these files - I had forgotten about the pop-ups on megaupload - sorry everyone! I only used that site as I can't access Rapidshare due to my IP address being shared by thousands of other BT customers and none of the others I have tried will allow an uplaod of more than 5Mb.

Anyway, look at the manuals on Kim's site here:
http://www.pentax-manuals.com/repairs.htm

Kim - I think there may be a cut & paste error in the description for the Leica IIIf service manual?

Leica got their fingers in a lot of buckets...

... or is it just me? I found this one on Kim's site:

"Leica factory manual covering the Canonet GIII. Mainly exploded diagrams and parts list."

It does really make me think I missed something during the camera history lessons. :D

Seriously, thanks for making these manuals available, guys!
