Lubitel camera

The Lubitel can be a standby for anyone who's essaying to try Medium Format without spending much. For the price of about 5 rolls of 120 film, you could get a nice MF camera.

I've used the Lubitel for "serious" applications. Had a CD album cover and some editorial shots done with it. Not everything associated with work has to be stiff and rigid- play and fun can be in the picture, so to speak 🙂

First two pics were made with a Lubitel 166B (needed for flash sync). Crossprocessed Ektachrome film.

Last was made with a Lubitel-1 (not marked as "1"), on BW film with a deep red filter.

are you on flickr? ive seen the cross processed shots somewhere before........quite recently.


did you do the cross yourself? im trying to find out whether its cheaper to buy slide and develop in c41 or buy negs and develop in E6. or maybe c41 and e6 are commercial only and im way off the target.

I do crossprocessing myself- quite easy and any developing mistakes are quite forgiveable since errors can sometimes add to the quality of the picture as well.
I get premixed C41 chemistry from friendly 1-hour labs. They supply these in half-litre doses; the chemistry they use make 10 litre solutions, too much for an occasional crossprocessor.

If you can find out-of-date slide film, your costs will even be lower.

I picked up a Toyocaflex not too long ago for $25, which is probably cheaper than what Lubitels go for on Ebay. I haven't gotten results from the camera yet, but playing around with it, everything seems to work fine. The 3,5F lens is a bit dim but whatever, I just wanted to give TLR cameras a try.

japanese TLR's are dime a dozen(beutyflex etc).Go for them.

Hello everybody

It's not all THAT bad. Just for the fun of it, I once shot with mine an adequate number of pictures for a whole show. The show made "The Choice of the Week" of our local "New York Times" <g>.

regarding the Seagulls:

i havent handled lubitels but the seagulls cant b emuch better, except for light tightness.

my seagull doesnt have speed dials that line up and the 1/15 second setting is finicky. the entire shutter assembly gave up the ghost but i fixed it by violently moving the sutter speed dial about and now the shutter seem to line up better too.

this is one of those cameras that will neve work properly but probably will never completely die either.

Id rather buy a lubitel for fun shots(light leaks and all) plus a proper TLR for serious stuff
