Lucky Film in RODINAL?

Hey all,

I searched on the massive dev chart to no avail. I've got a fridge full of a bunch of Lucky SHD400 film (120 format) but I can't find a time to develop it in Rodinal.

Anyone got an idea how long for at 1+50?

AT a starting point, just do 10% more than 35mm film. So if your times are 10 minutes for 35mm, add 1 minute for 120 as a starting point.
If you already did some shots and really need them, put the same film in the same camera and take some test shots in shade/sun/etc and then do a test process.

11 minutes in 1:50 Rodinal sounds about right. From what I could find, Lucky recommends 7 minutes in D76 which is about equivalent to 10-12 minutes (depending on agitation) in 1:50 Rodinal.

Ash, I'll be curious as to your results. I used SHD400 a bit when I lived in Beijing and developed it mostly in D-76 but was never very happy with it. Much preferred APX400 or HP5+. That said I have used Rodinal a lot and from what I remember of the SHD400 and my knowledge of Rodinal I'm not optimistic that is going to be a very pretty result, especially if you plan to scan the negs. VERY evident grain and steep, narrow tonal range. But let us see what you come up with.

Agreed, the results will likely be harsh.
I generally avoid using Rodinal for speeds above 100, unless I'm pulling a 400 speed film to 200 (which can be very nice).

Rich, Peter, I might go to 1+100 to pull some more tone.

Either way I've started darkroom printing again (but my paper is limited - i'm using a bag full of half-packs I was given for the moment) so I'm trying for printable negs, not scannable 🙂

For 1+100 you'd probably want to shoot it at 200. A 1+100 time for 400 would be in the neighbourhood of 30 minutes (just a guess, someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

Right, resurrecting this because I shot 3 rolls of the stuff this afternoon and I'm not allowed to mess up!!!

Any idea whether 1+50 at 11 minutes is ok? HELP!!

I still do not think you should use Rodinal, you will get big, ugly grain. But that said, I have no reason to believe that the 35mm is any different than the 120, and the Massive Dev Chart says 14-16 min for 35mm. If you're scanning the negs I'd say 11 min would be fine as I personally find about 10-15% less development time is better for neg scanning, especially if you shot contrasty subjects (then I do 20% less time sometimes). Otherwise, use D-76 1-1.

Other than generic dev (which i also don't know timing for), Rodinal is all I have! It'll cost too much for a bottle of D-76, and it's too late now anyway, the photo's really need to be developed tonight.


I'm also doing wet prints, so bear in mind my times are for the best neg, not for the best scan.

If these are critical, then I would honestly waste a couple bucks on a spare roll, if possible at all, to test it out. I hate getting or giving this bit of advice, but in this case it may be appropriate, considering the importance of the matter at hand.

Researching, I found people think it's a Tri-X clone. That about right do you think? Should I try Tri-X timing? (about a minute more than what people have said already)

I've dug out the piece of paper the dudes who sold me my lucky (and your 100 speed) told me.

400 ISO Lucky

Rodinal 1+50 = 16 minutes (tank). The tempreture is not written down but I'm assuming it is 20C.

I only had this developed in 35mm format then they did it in HC-110, so I can't say anything about results.

How many rolls do you have? If you have one more, shoot a bunch in similar lighting and test that one out.

Take a look at the roll and see if it is one stop under or one stop over developed and work from there. For example, if it looks like 1:50 at 11 minutes, you are about a stop under for all of it, then do it at 1:50 around 15 minutes.
