Luigi case question for R-D1

I think his cases are just great, and since there isn't much choice for the Epson, it's looking like there will be another in my life.

My question is: would any users who have used the body more than I venture an opinion on using the camera with the screen being exposed vs. hidden?

I haven't used the body extensively yet, but it seems to me since it's not a real time screen it won't be used as often as a standard digital body.

Am I wrong? Am I missing something?

The reason I ask, of course, is because Luigi offers to cut out the back for the screen. IF I'm going to use it, it would suck if I didn't cut the back, and IF I'm not, it woud equally suck if I left the body exposed!

Help?

I bought mine uncut, but tend to take the camera out of the case when shooting. I guess I still find the display useful for reviewing pictures.
 
If I would splurge money on a Luigi case for my R-D1, I definitely will ask him to cut for the display. I can be a clumsy git, and having to take the camera out of the case every time I'd want to use the display, would likely soon result in a camera heading for the pavement. Before I got the R-D1 I was thinking I'd never use the display. Now, however, it's turned outside all the time. Needless to say I find it a more than useful part of the camera. 🙂
 
I just ordered a case for my R-D1 from Luigi and faced the same decision. Aside from having the LCD cut out or not, there are a couple of other options that aren't shown on his site.

One option is to have the leather piece from the cut out area stitched back in place along the top; it can then be flipped up when you need to use the LCD. This is the solution that Luigi recommends.

Another option is to have snaps or velcro placed outside the corners of the cutout area. A matching piece of leather, either with snaps or velcro, is provided that can be attached when a cover is needed. This costs extra and wasn't recommended by Luigi; he tried it and preferred the flap.

I ended up going for the snaps anyway, as I wanted to be able to uncover the LCD whenever I wanted. The case hasn't arrived yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing how well it works out.
 
I had mine with the cutout and a normal screen protector. I find it quite handy to be able to access the LCD at any time, if I am unsure about exposure, I check the histogram right after shooting.
I wish the RD-1 behaved like my 20D where I can have the picture and the Histogram shown automatically for 1 sec after a picture is taken.
 
I have a Luigi case and love it. I don't have the cutout, and on occasion when I wanted to check exposure taking the case on and off is not easy: it is made to fit very snugly. I didn't know about the velcro/snap attachments for a leather screen cover. Sounds like a good idea.

Did anyone ever get their hands on the half case that Epson Japan was offering a couple of months ago?
 
I'll be very interested in how the Luigi case with snaps works in the field. Holding the flap open with one hand while viewing the screen "sounds" very awkward, especially if one wants to use the fingers of the other hand to depress the menu buttons.

Currently I do not use a screen protector. As with a PDA, some tend to distort the screen image, which is not entirely unacceptable for that application, but would be for a camera LCD.

Who is using a screen protector, and what brand?
 
I sprang.

Case with window in the back, but the leather left as a flap attached at the top. Thinking about it, I might have to make a tab to keep in closed in a bag, etc, but I'll live with it a while

In the mean time, I can't wait. His stuff is nice.

I am using a Jessops brand screen protector, I don't really mind that much if the image is a little distorted, the only use I have for the LCD is for checking the histogram, also distortion is really minimal.
You can't anyway check the image quality on the LCD.
 
Ducttape: Congrats, you won't regret it. Great case. Did you get the strap too? Pretty nice also. The snaps on mine were very tight. I almost ripped out my right thumbnail trying to pop it off one time. Ouch.

No strap. I have one for my M body and yes, it is a very good strap. Surprisingly durable. But I put a Voigt. strap from Stephen Gandy on this (cloth w/ leather tabs) and it looks and feels great, and I own it and it was much cheaper...

Amazing how 2 bills for a case is cheaper than 50 for a strap :bang:
