My shipment notice was sent last saturday, but I'm also still waiting for the Andalé Andalé post donkey delivering Felipe's bag, so I wouldn't bet too much on myself

Please post your thoughts completely upon receipt everyone.
I have never purchased from (or heard of) such a company as "lulu.com".
Great idea, but I simply want to make certain the quality is good.
Also, please post your honest thoughts on the book. Looking forward to it, and purchasing it myself....again, simply concerned about quality of the book and images primarily.
Best.

I just got mine in the last 30 minutes. I have to say that I can only second what Steve says.
I am simply very impressed with the quality of the printing of this book. It is of good quality paper stock, cover and pages. The printing and binding is clean. I also have to say that the design and layout are excellent. I will actually say that I like the size of the print in the book, so in that I differ from Steve, but that is a personal taste thing, neither right or wrong.
Go ahead D, buy a copy.
When I checked this morning we had sold a total of 99 books and were #52 on the lulu best seller list.
Who is going to be #100?

The book is in my hands!
The book is in my hands!
I knew the book was coming in today, so I came back by the house on an early lunch break and found the FedEx guy parked in front with the delivery. Talk about timing (it was helpful he was also delivering several boxes of supplies for my business). Anyway, the book looks great! I guess the font size is the issue? I agree it is a tad big, but not a distraction in any way. I'll add that I would have loved to have seen the RFf screen names added/listed somewhere, maybe in the bios in the back of the book or under the photographers names. The photos and photographers are well presented with fine printing and class. Great job on the layout, Gene. A keepsake, for sure!

Having placed the very first order, I'm jealous of everyone who has received a copy!
I need to have a copy in hand before I can assess it. The font size is the same as it was when we voted on the layout -- no changes. But it's one thing printing it out on paper and another seeing it printed and bound. If there is a consensus that it is a little large for the book, that can be fixed (I can reduce the fontsize and republish the interior of the book). This will only help with future purchases, of course.
If I had one reservation at the 11th hour it was that we were using a LOT of white space on the page facing each photograph. My current thinking (if we were to do this again) would be to print a photo on each page, with just the photo's title and the photographer's name, and put all the description and technical info in the back where the fonts can be smallish. In addition to being very clean (IMO) it would make the book smaller, hence less expensive.
I need to see a copy though. Come on, Canada Post!! Andale!

Gene,
White space is good, IMO, especially with photographs. I like the layout. I think you made the right choice keeping the comments with the photos. As far as the font goes, it may be that there isn't enough distinction between the headers (photographer's name), the title, and the body text. It looks like the same font with a just little difference (size, italics) Maybe the issue is there isn't a lot of contrast between the three. If you are going to redo it, you may want to consider a sans serif font for the header, something distinct from the body text. Again, not a distraction, or a criticism in any way. You guys did a great job. I'm just giving feedback.

Much appreciated too! As a 'survivor' of many a project, I always assume it could have been done better. That's why project postmortems are important. At the end of every project I like to explore three things:RayPA said:Again, not a distraction, or a criticism in any way. You guys did a great job. I'm just giving feedback.
1. What we did right
2. Things we could improve on
3. Lessons learned
Of the three, #3 is the most important for me.

My copy is sitting in the customer service office at my apartment building, which opened late (after I had to be at work) and will be closed by the time I get home. This is SOOO frustrating, I don't want to wait until tomorrow to see it!
Gene, wait till you get the book in your hands. The white space isn't bad at all,in fact I would say it draws attention to the photos just as we thought it would. It is very impressive.
Again, we owe thanks to Richard for the quality of the book. He did a lot of homework in the first few days of this project to learn about lulu and questioned himself the quality of their printing. Just another great example of something done right.

We do owe Richard. I hope he is reading the RFF book threads and understands how much we appreciate what he did.

I finally got to pick up my copy from the apartment office. I opened it right there on the spot and read it cover to cover. In a word... amazing. I've seen the photos online but there's still magic in seeing these images in print, it was like discovering them all over again.
To everyone involved, a hearty congratulations, you've done very well indeed!
Oh, and the customer service lady was so impressed by the photos she's going to order a copy for her husband

If I'm not mistaken, my shipping information said the book shipped out of Rochester, NY. Still it took 9 days from order to delivery to get to California. Is the Canadian/USPS combination normally excessively lengthy?
