LX-5 or S95

I don't think there is a bad choice, both cameras are very good if you are not looking for a larger sensor/larger camera.

In a nutshell. Or get both.
I have the LX3 and l like it so much I got two of them. Size is the only reason to get the Canon, but it may be a good enough reason.
Even with two LX3s I will buy the LX5 before the Canon. The LX5 is small enough for me.

Essentially, the LX3 and LX5 have an oversized sensor that, I think, is roughly 11MP in size. What it does is it actually uses a crop of the sensor to generate the different aspects. So, from the complete 11MP sensor, you can get 10MP for 4:3, 9.5MP for 3:2, and 8.9MP for 16:9.

The LX3 is the same way. Midway down the introduction page of Dpreview's review of the LX3 explains how Multi-aspect works.

I just read that, thank you. One more question, on dpreview both cameras have reported 1:1 resolution of 2736x2736 pixels I guess. So, do both cameras have the same oversized sensor size?

The 1:1 is just another creative shooting aspect. I just checked and it's like 7MP in size, but I haven't really had a use for it. My guess is that the area of the sensor for the LX3 and LX5 is the same, but the actual sensor used in the LX5 is new and improved. I guess we'll find out once someone does a formal review.

Your welcome. Good luck with your decision. Kudos for setting a time limit. I always take way too long to decide . Ultimately, pocketability was the overriding factor for me.
 
I am pretty satisfied that I made the right choice. I can't wait for it to arrive. It is being shipped to my work address so I think I will have it in my hands Monday being that I ordered it this early in the morning today.
 
After comparing LX-5 to S95 I went with Panasonic, but it was a toss up. The only clear advantage I think is the movie capability on the LX-5, if that's important to you, go with the Pani.
 
the LX5 is not a pocket camera, unless you want people to believe you are very excited about something....

S95 is a true trousers pocketable camera, if that's what you're after, I think it's the best choice.

the sensor size of nex 5 and high iso performance, possibility of using his lenses, not mention its speed which is entry level dslr like and its price. i think the days of clunky expenisve p&s that takes 3 seconds between shots and a has a sensor the size of an ant's pool is finished.

Yep that's why I still shoot my film PnS with their large sensors and pocketability.

My S95 was stunning.
