M-E (typ240)

I thought they cleared them out with those Zenits. Must have had a bunch of body castings. And space grey. How trendy. Even the new X1D II is space grey.

TBH that looks pretty nice. Although I'd prefer a mint M-P 240 in plain black. The anthracite grey is interesting, though, and the 'genuine leather' covering sounds good, too. Certainly better than the 'premium vegan leather' of the Lenny Kravitz model.

The local camera shop here has it listed at $4695 CDN. The 262 is "on sale" for $6195 CDN. The M-E is almost a bargain...

Why not just get a good condition used MP240??

The old, 2012 M-E was priced a bit higher than the used price of the M9 at the time, but came with warranty, which was essential to the failure-prone digital Ms. Same applies to this one. Leica does know the used market well...

U.S. price is $3995 for the new ME. What's the lowest price Leica has charged for a full frame digital M? I have not read the full spec, but the new ME appears to have everything the MP240 has, minus the sapphire glass. A brand new MP240 lists at $7495.

Not quite. The M-E 240 doesn't have the frameline preview selector. But it is an improvement over the M240 due to its 2MB buffer (same as M-P 240).

In the Leica world, based on what I currently know about it, it's not a bad deal!

I have it on good authority that the new M-E 240 is a limited run (750 units) intended to compete directly with the Zenit (on the same platform).

I was hoping to see the M262 prices go down because of this announcement. Any reason why it shouldn't except for the M-E being a tactical move by Leica to divert users from Zenit?

I think the M-E is a great addition to the Leica lineup. A lower cost Leica M entry point has long been needed. I hope the M-E (or another lower cost M) becomes standard production.
